Mountain stabbing victim tells his story

Published by Kirsten Jacobs on November 26, 2019

There has been an increase in attacks on mountains over the last year, with many victims being left attacked and some even killed. One victim, Murray Middleton, shares his story.

Speaking to Cape Talk, Murray Middleton details his frightening experience being brutally attacked whilst hiking Devils Peak. Back in 2018, Middleton and three other trail runners were attacked, tied up and stabbed multiple times by five assailants on the popular hiking trail.

Middleton was ambushed by two guys brandishing large knives, who then forced him off the trail, where three other men were waiting. The other victims were already tied up. They made Middleton strip off his clothes, tied him up, gagged him and then made him lay on the ground for 45 minutes while the attackers continued to look for other victims.

After an hour, Middleton and the victims were all robbed and stabbed multiple times then left to die as their attackers escaped. The victims were able to release themselves from their ties and report the crime.

Luckily, the police and SANParks were able to apprehend four of the five suspects.

Middleton believes the attack was motivated by more than just robbing them.

“They were looking to rob people, but not just to rob people,” Middleton said. “It was a lot more of a hate crime than a mugging…They were speaking mostly in Xhosa but let us know what was going on. One of the guys that was attacked with us understood Xhosa and he said that they were saying that they were going to slaughter us like cattle.”

The four victims will appear in court today to testify on the attack.

Kommetjie tented camp closes due to safety concerns

A popular camping spot at Kommetjie’s Slangkop has reportedly been closed following what is being referred to as an “incident” that raised safety concerns.

Speaking to CapeTalk, a local tour guide confirmed that his booking for a group of clients in early February was cancelled by SANParks following an incident that took place at the site last week.

No information is currently available regarding the details surrounding the incident, but it is clear that it concerned management enough that they decided to close the site altogether as they look into ways to increase safety at the location.

This is not the first time a popular camping spot has closed due to safety concerns. Orange Kloof Tented Camp also closed in 2019 following a series of robberies that took place in the area.

To date, SANParks has provided no official comment regarding the closure and did not even provide the tour guide with information as to why his booking was cancelled.

Out of the four camps located along the Hoerikwaggo Trail that connects Cape Point and Table Mountain, only one camp is still operating.

It’s no secret that Cape Town’s tourism industry has been thrown into chaos due to crime and safety concerns. Going ahead, many tourism-focused offerings will need to up their safety regulations and this includes camping sites and hiking trails.

Cape Town Etc made efforts to contact SANParks for comment regarding the safety issues but no response was received at the time of publishing.

Where I am staying there are electric fences around every single bungalow (there are four, I think) and electric gates too and of course double ones around the whole property.

Cecil John Rhodes statue: No arrests as police probe who chopped off bust's head in Cape Town
Cebelihle Mthethwa

The head of Cecil Rhodes has been chopped away from a bust of the 19th century colonialist at a monument on the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, park rangers said on Tuesday.

Western Cape police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after the head of a Cecil John Rhodes statue was chopped off in Cape Town this week.

According to the police, the case was opened at the Rondebosch police station on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said the police are still investigating and that no one has been arrested.

It was discovered on Monday that the statue at Rhodes Memorial had been missing its head.

On Tuesday, SA National Park's regional spokesperson Lauren Howard-Clayton confirmed the statue had been vandalised this week.

"We did discover the vandalism of the statue," Howard-Clayton told News24.

"It must have happened sometime between the 12th or the 13th, either in the evening of the 12th or the morning of the 13th," she added.

Rhodes' statue is situated on the memorial site, in Devil's Peak in Cape Town.

In 2015, the nose of the bust was also cut off during Rhodes Must Fall protests, which were led by UCT students calling for the decolonisation of higher education and academic institution environments.

In 2018, the nose was restored by a local artist and historian.

Media Release: SANParks confirms vandalism at Rhodes Memorial

16 July 2020

South African National Parks (SANParks) can confirm that the bust of the 19th-century colonialist Cecil John Rhodes at Rhodes Memorial has been vandalised.

According to Rey Thakhuli, Acting Head of Communications, "the head of the statue was cut from the bust with what seems to be an angle grinder somewhere between Sunday night or the early hours of Monday morning."

Table Mountain National Park senior section ranger on patrol of the area came across the incident on Monday 13 July 2020, and a case of vandalism has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Rondebosch for further investigation.

The reasoning behind the incident is not yet known at this stage.
