Former KNP field guide pleads guilty to poaching
Kenneth Msibi will be sentenced on September 8.

SKUKUZA – Kenneth Msibi, former field guide in the Shisangeni area of the Kruger National Park, pleaded guilty to rhino poaching in the Skukuza Regional Court last Thursday.

Helene Eloff

Msibi was arrested on September 3, 2014. WO Willie Broodryk testified during his previous court appearances.
“At 06:00 that morning a rhino was found with its horns removed. They had been cut off with an axe and a knife,” he said.

A day before, Mbisi had taken a group of tourists on a game drive. They had come across a rhino that was badly injured after fighting with another rhino. The animal died as a result of its injuries.

Investigators noticed that the horn’s removal had happened while Mbisi was on two days’ leave.

The police received further information linking Mbisi to the crime. He had allegedly cut the rhino’s horns off, transported them out of the park wrapped in a blanked and placed them in a white Toyota Corolla.

Police stopped and searched the car in the Komatipoort area. About 50 metres from the car they found a blanket.

“Inside it were two rhino horns,” said Broodryk.

The blanket was tied up with an electrical cable. Traces of the same cable were found in Msibi’s house. This linked him to the crime.
His guilty plea was noted and the case postponed to September 8 for sentencing.

One of the accused, André Mabunda.

SKUKUZA – A former SANParks field guide, a Kruger National Park (KNP) section ranger and a gardener charged with poaching, appeared briefly in the Skukuza Regional Court last Thursday.

Helene Eloff

André Mabunda, Shakes Baloyi and Laurence Baloyi were arrested in the KNP on September 21, 2014.

They face charges of hunting a protected species in the Kruger, possession of a firearm and ammunition with the intent to commit a crime, unlawful possession of ammunition, conspiracy to commit a crime, and the attempted theft of rhino horn.

In October 2014, during their bail hearing, it was testified that officials patrolling in a SAPS helicopter spotted a rhino carcass. The animal had been shot. Upon landing they found an axe close to it. The SANParks Special Operations Team was called in. Shakes and

Mabunda were discovered in the bush. A hunting rifle, ammunition and two empty shells were also found in the men’s possession.

Investigations implicated Laurence, who was released on bail shortly after their first appearance. Mabunda was granted bail of R5 000 in November 2015.

The case was postponed and the three will appear in the Skukuza Regional Court again on October 31.

MBOMBELA – The former Hawks head in Mpumalanga, who is accused of theft and defeating the ends of justice, allegedly stole money seized from rhino poachers. Capt Richard Nkwanyana (48) was based in Mbombela.

He was arrested on October 2, after handing himself over to the Hawks’ Middelburg unit following a drawn-out investigation into the alleged theft of approximately R500 000.

He appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on three counts of theft and one of defeating the ends of justice.

Provincial National Prosecuting Authority spokesman, Monica Nyuswa said Nkwanyana is alleged to have signed out money seized during rhino-poaching operations executed by other officers, and never signing it back in again

“The one incident was for R43 500, the other for R232 400 and another for R164 500.”

She said Nkwanyana has since been dismissed from the Hawks and has been barred from entering any of its offices.

He is out on R5 000 bail and the matter was postponed for trial to May 16.

Media Release: SANParks arrests Field Rangers suspected of rhino poaching

19 June 2018

South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced the arrest of two field rangers suspected of being involved in rhino poaching. The two suspects were based at the Houtboschrand section and are alleged to have shot and dehorned a white rhino in May 2018.

The suspects were arrested on Monday morning as a result of an intensive joint investigation carried out by the SANParks Environmental Crime Investigative Unit and the SAPS. Their arrest follows a report in May in which shots were reported by tourists and a poached rhino carcass was then found with its horns missing. The two suspects had been deployed in the area at the time of the reports.

The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park (KNP) Glenn Phillips congratulated the investigating team on the arrests “we have a zero tolerance for corruption and criminality within our ranks and are very disappointed at some of our members who betray the trust of all South Africans and nature lovers, we want to warn others that we are coming after you” concluded Phillips. The two suspects will be appearing in court in due course.

Meanwhile three poachers were arrested on Monday by Rangers who had been following suspect tracks for most of the day. The Rangers who were supported by K9 and Airwing reaction teams made the arrests shortly before last light. The suspects were in possession of a heavy calibre hunting rifle, poaching equipment and ammunition at the time of arrest. The suspects will be facing charges related to illegal hunting in a National Park.

No excuse, though. I think inside jobs are the biggest problem, to be honest. Right up to Ministerial level.

SANParks ARRESTS A STAFF MEMBER ON SUSPICION OF RHINO POACHING

South African National Parks (SANParks) today, announced the arrest of a staff member on Saturday, 25 August 2018. The man was employed as an Armed Guard for Technical Services in the Kruger National Park (KNP).

The suspect was arrested on Saturday afternoon, the 25th August along with three others who were taken into police custody after a SANParks Protection Services, Security Guard, deployed at the Paul Kruger gate, noticed four suspicious persons entering the park in a vehicle.

The Security Guard notified SAPS officials who were also deployed at the Gate at the time and the four suspects were handed over to the SAPS and taken into police custody. During follow up investigations by the police a heavy calibre rifle, ammunition and poaching related equipment was recovered. Unfortunately three of the suspects managed to escape from police custody whilst being transported and are currently still at large.

The suspect has appeared in court and was identified as Absalom Manyike. He was stationed at Satara and has been employed by SANParks since 2014. He will undergo the organization’s internal disciplinary process in due course.

The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park, Glenn Phillips commended the Protection Services for being vigilant but was disappointed that some of the suspects managed to escape from police custody. “We are glad that we have removed a betrayer from our ranks and will wait for justice to take its course. This should serve as a warning to all staff members who are assisting criminals; we will come after you and the consequence is that you will lose your job and go to jail for a long period”

Investigations are still on-going and all attempts are being made to arrest the three escaped suspects.
