Two suspects were arrested after they were found in the possession of two rhino horns in the Kruger National Park (KNP) on Wednesday, said police spokesperson Lieutenant General SM Makgale.
“The SAPS team was busy conducting crime-scene investigations in the park when they were alerted that employees of a private company in the park were involved in illicit dealing in rhino horn,” he said.
“Our investigators followed up on the information which led to the initial arrest of the 40-year old suspect and then the subsequent arrested of the 55-year old suspect. The rhino horns were found hidden in nearby bushes and confiscated.”
Makgale said the horns were removed from an adult rhino with a possible age of five years. He said both suspects are believed to have been involved in negotiations to sell the horns to a Mozambican national.
“The Mozambican could not be traced but the detectives were able to confiscate his Ford Ranger as well as a Toyota Corolla belonging to the 40 year old suspect. Detectives are working closely with their counterparts from neighbouring Mozambique to trace the third suspect,” he said.
The suspects will appear in the White River Magistrates court on Friday on charges of unlawful possession of rhino horns and restricted activities in the KNP.

Rangers of private concession within KNP busted with rhino horn
KOMATIPOORT – It became apparent again this week that nobody can be trusted in the war against rhino poaching.
SANParks rangers unfortunately had to arrest three of their colleagues in conservation after they removed the horns of a rhino that had died of natural causes and smuggled it out of the Kruger National Park (KNP) on Wednesday.
However, their arrests came thanks to a colleague who overheard them scheming and consequently alerted the relevant authorities.
The horns of all rhino that die in Kruger are removed and stored for safe keeping. The carcass of a rhino that had died of natural causes was discovered in the Crocodile Bridge section of the park on Wednesday morning. Three rangers of Shishangeni Private Lodge, a private concession within the park, removed the horns and smuggled it out of the park. A colleague who had overheard a conversation between them, realised that they were intending on selling the horns and alerted SANParks rangers.
The help of the SAPS was called in SANParks rangers and police officials tracked the suspects in Komatipoort where they were arrested. They had parked their vehicle at the railway line in town and apparently attempted to hide the horns when they realised they had been busted. However, investigators were able to retrieve the horns.
A fourth ranger of Shishangeni was apparently also arrested later that afternoon. The suspects are expected to appear in court today (Friday). Spokesmen for SANParks did not respond to enquiries at the time of going to press.

Re: Rhino Poaching 2014
And situations like this were so thoroughly discussed at the Oscap
conference by most speakers!! The crux of the matter and do not at
all be surprised, lies closer to home than what one would like to believe.
A little off the cuff here but by example a botched hijacking attempt
ending in a violent shootout recently proved two suspects, to be cops
and even worse, on duty!!!!???
Well, over the years how often did we not have to hear/read about
those involved, supposedly "good citizens" and law abiding..
I still believe our emmediate problem does not lie there in the far east.
Our greatest problem lies here right on our doorstep!!!! We as a nation?
This rotten free for all attitude leaves a lot of room for thought!!
.Gov needs to do some urgent introspect but then again the truth will
hurt., or at the least will not be fitting the urgency of the day.
.Gov has all the greatest respect for and integrity placed too those
would be investors for they bring along huge amounts of money and
help, I beg you!!!
Just such a great pity our own integrity is of such low standard making
it possible for all, good and bad, to participate in stripping this country
to the bone!!
It remains our problem and needs to be addressed that way!!! Let's not
go out there and blame the whole world for our own ineptness or rather
cheapskate outlook on life!!!

Exactly, H.!
We are sliding down beneath other African countries regarding this dilemma, never mind the rest of the world!
