South African Revenue Service (Sars) officials on Thursday discovered 267kg of ivory at OR Tambo International Airport in transit for Vietnam from Zimbabwe.

It‚ said a Sars statement‚ “is estimated to have a street value of R4-million‚ which is one of the biggest interceptions by Sars of smuggled ivory”.

The discovery‚ the statement said‚ occurred “during the profiling of shipments…when officials noticed a pallet containing numerous plastic shrink-wrapped boxes”.

The supporting documents declared the goods contained inside as “handicrafts” originating from Zimbabwe destined for Vietnam.

An inspection revealed “ivory tusks amongst shredded paper” and as “no CITES permits were issued for the consignment‚ (it was) a clear attempt to smuggle the goods”.

A case has been opened with the South African Police Service for further investigation.

Singapore seizes elephant ivory and pangolin scales in record $48m haul

23 July 2019

The haul was Singapore's largest ivory seizure to date

Singapore authorities have seized 8.8 tonnes (8,800kg) of elephant ivory, its largest seizure to date.

Authorities estimate that the tusks, valued at $12.9m (£10.4m), have come from nearly 300 African elephants.

Some 11.9 tonnes of pangolin scales valued at $35.7m were also seized. It is believed to have belonged to about 2,000 of the mammals.

The illegal cargo was found in containers after a tip-off from China's customs department.

Authorities discovered the animal parts on Sunday after they inspected a shipment from the Democratic Republic of Congo that was passing through Singapore on its way to Vietnam.

The containers were falsely declared to contain timber.

"Upon inspection, sacks containing pangolin scales and elephant ivory were found in one of the containers," the National Parks Board said in a statement.

It is not the first time such illegal goods have been found in Singapore. The country has seized a total of 37.5 tonnes of pangolin scales since April this year.

"Singapore has always been inadvertently implicated in the global ivory trade for two reasons: its global connectivity, as well as the presence of a small domestic market where pre-1990s ivory can be legally sold," Kim Stengert, chief communications officer for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Singapore, told Reuters.

Ivory is used for ornaments and in traditional medicine in Asia. Pangolin scales are also in high demand in Asia for use in traditional Chinese medicine.

The pangolin is said to be the most widely trafficked mammal in the world.

Under Singapore's Endangered Species Act, the maximum penalty for illegally importing, exporting and re-exporting wildlife is a fine of up to S$500,000 ($370,000; £295,000) and/or two years imprisonment.

Tanzanian arrested with tusks from 117 elephants

2019-09-05 22:05

A Tanzanian man has been arrested after authorities found a stash of ivory buried under his house, estimated to come from around 117 elephants, authorities said Thursday.

The suspect, who had been sought by authorities since 2016, had in his possession 338 pieces of elephant tusk, and 75 whole tusks, the minister of natural resources, Hamisi Kigwangalla, said in a statement.

He was arrested along with seven alleged accomplices, and the tusks are believed to have come from Tanzania and Mozambique.

"Until his arrest on Tuesday, he was unable to move this stock, because we have become extremely vigilant," said Kigwangalla.

"I am giving a period of grace of one month for any person in possession of elephant tusks to hand them in to authorities without facing prosecution."

Since 2016, around 1 000 poachers, some heavily armed, have been arrested in Tanzania whose elephant population plunged 60 percent between 2009 and 2014 due to poaching.

In February a Tanzanian court sentenced Chinese citizen Yang Fenlan - dubbed the "Ivory Queen" - to 15 years in jail for her role in trafficking tusks from more than 400 elephants.

Poaching has seen the population of African elephants fall by 110 000 over the past decade to just 415 000 animals, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The slaughter is being fuelled especially by demand in Asia, where ivory is used for jewellery and ornamentation.

Two men arrested for illegal possession of elephant tusks and firearms

The two were arrested by members of the Hawks’ Wildlife Trafficking Unit in conjunction with members of the Nelspruit SAPS Crime Intelligence on Wednesday.

MBOMBELA – Johan Cox (41) and Hendrick Bernardus Elvis (32) appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court yesterday for illegal possession of elephant tusks and firearms in Sunrise View, Mbombela.

According to Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, information was received of two individuals who were allegedly in possession of elephant tusks.

The joint team immediately acted on the information and conducted a search and seizure operation at the suspects’ premises which resulted in the confiscation of six elephant tusks and five illegal firearms which were concealed inside a trailer.

Sekgotodi mentioned in a statement, “Investigations are under way to determine the origin of the tusks and the confiscated firearms to see if they were used in the commission of any crime. Elvis and Cox will appear again in the same court today for a formal bail application.”

The two men, aged 42 and 40, were nabbed during a joint operation by the Hawks, the endangered species team and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan SWAT.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Hawks Ndivhuwo Mulamu says they were aware of the two suspects selling elephant tusks.

“On arrival, the suspect’s vehicles were positively identified, and we moved swiftly and apprehended the suspects. In the boot we have found five elephant tusks wrapped in a luggage and weighing 45 kilograms.”

The suspects will appear at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charged of contravening the National Environment Management Biodiversity Act.
