Just how cute are lion cubs?

The answer has to be nothing short of extremely cute. There is something about seeing lion cubs that creates a warm feeling deep down into one’s soul. Perhaps its because when they grow up they have an awe-inspiring presence to them, yet when they are so small their clumsy antics couldn’t be further from that image of power and domination they show as adults.

Their playful wrestling is all part of their training for the day when they are big enough to take down a buffalo – though now it merely looks entertaining and quite frankly adorable.

Here at Umlani Bushcamp, we are fortunate enough to have eight of these little balls of furry cuteness to view whilst out on safari, and we have had some quality sightings of the cubs as they rough house in a riverbed close to the den that the lionesses from the pride are keeping them in.

Image

It seems that all the lionesses in the pride gave birth more or less at the same time, so the cubs are all of similar age.

The lionesses can then take turns to look after and nurse the cubs should one or more of the mothers be away hunting for extended periods of time.

Image

Although the cubs all look pretty identical to us, it is amazing to see the bond between the different mothers and their cubs. They know exactly which cubs belong to which lioness.

Image

Even at rest these cubs are just too cute for words. This makes writing about them very challenging, so how about we rather let the pictures do all the talking?

Image

It is going to be exciting times here watching all these cubs growing up and become important pride members one day, under the protection of both their pride and the two strong dominant males in the area.

Image

And with the abundance of prey animals found within their territory the future looks bright for these little ones. We look forward to watching them grow.

WATCH: Kruger lions enjoy what looks like a family-day frolic in the Sand River

Kruger lions enjoy what looks like a family-day frolic in the Sand River

While most cats are known to hate the water, this Charleston pride in the Greater Kruger region seem to defy the natural order.

Cats in general, especially African lions, are known to hate the water. For this pride, it seemed like a fun day out for the family.

Mike Kirkman, a 37-year-old head ranger in Mala Mala Game Reserve in Greater Kruger, captured this family-outing to the Sand River on Mala Mala.

Kirkman tells Latest Sightings, “I had followed the lioness to a thicket where she called her cubs who were hidden. Once they came out, we followed them to the river where they lay down in the water, then moved on again to where she and two male lions had killed a buffalo.

"The next day I found the lions at the same carcass and the males also now in the water, where she joined them. The cubs can also be seen running around in the area playing in the river.

Kirkman explains the pride, known as the Charleston Pride, have been known to lay in shallow water, but he had never seen them "as deep as this and evidently enjoying being cooled off".

"The cubs obviously thought this was completely normal and so just carried on," he says.

"These are the only lions and indeed the only cats that I have ever seen in the wild just plop down in the river to cool off and have fun in the water."

In all his 15 years of guiding he has not experienced anything like this and does not expect to again. Kirkman suspects this unusual nature must have been learned behaviour.

"The two males (Charleston Males) are quite well-known and recognizable as one had a tooth knocked loose and hanging down like a saber-tooth cat for some time," he says, "the lioness and cubs moved into Kruger eventually."

"The only theory I have it that for some reason the lioness learned to do it and then passed it on to the two males." Kirkman explains they are the nephews of one of the females who has raised them after their mother was killed.

"I have no idea why these lions don’t have a dislike to the water like most lions do."

The lions eventually moved off after they had finished their buffalo.

The 'Charleston Pride' resident in South Mala Mala loves the water for some reason ..even as a child their ancestors loved frolicking in the water when I stayed on my Aunts Farm 'Charleston' ..now part of Greater Mala Mala.
