Kudu

Post by okie »

I was asked to choose the mammal of the month of July , and what better than the majestic kudu .

This antelope consist of two species , namely :

Greater Kudu - Tragelaphus strepsiceros -which occur in Southern Africa .
Lesser Kudu - Tragelaphus imberbis .

Kudus are quite common ,and we see them quite often when visiting Kruger as well as other Sanparks , but surprisingly , I do not have very many photographs of them . They are shy , quite often skittish , and often , before I can get my camera " set-up " , they have dissappeared into the bush .
Here is a pic of a beautiful specimen seen near Timbavati picnic site some time ago .

We saw this kudu with 'wonky' horns at Sunset Dam in Oct. 2011.

The "wonkey horn" is normally a result of an injury received while young! \O

We saw this magnificent bull upon entering KNP in January 2012.

And we've seen many a kudu bull on top of a hill in the South. A reminder of Custos Naturae.

I don't think that male is quite into "lady" stuff yet.? Could be vigilance? Some trees like Jackal Berry often grow on antheaps, and are a favourite of kudu...or simply getting a breeze or escaping flies?

Don't know?
