Gump and I saw a giant water terrapin there a few weeks ago...roughly the size of a very large leopard tortoise!

I was busy taking photos and The Husband was busy scanning the bankside for anything interesting when he suddenly said ‘what are those ducks doing over there?’ there was a group of ducks and a group on mongeese (mongooses?) we watched and it looked for all the world as if the ducks were chasing the mongeese away from the waters edge.

From Pumbaa in 2015:

We postponed our daily ice cream dose to the afternoon and so we were inside the car again in no minute to pay a short visit to Sunset dam and also here all the existing crocodiles obviously decided to take a sunbath at the same time as we have never seen that many of them outside the water. Between them there could be seen some real monsters according to their size. One of these monsters was feeding on something close to where we parked and first we only heard always some “klonk, klonk” every time the crocodile was moving its jaws

Image

and only later whilst enlarging the pictures we found out that same was in fact feeding on a large terrapin.

Image

Never saw that before and we found it extreme scary and fascinating at the same time. Besides this feeding creature others were relaxing in the sun

Image

and even another water monitor was sleepy and abused a small rock as pillow.

Image

Obviously this crocodile was in a good mood according to its “big” smile

Image

a large group of yellow-billed storks was resting on their knees and obviously today was stork resting day as the saddle billed storks just earlier did the same.

Image

There was a lot of noise going on caused by the buffalo weavers who were busy in building nests in the dead tree inside the dam and we had a great time in watching the birds collecting nesting material

Image

and transport the heavy freight up into the tree as some branches they had chosen were far larger than the birds.

Image

A group of impalas came to drink and they were eying the crocodiles lying lazily on the shore suspiciously whilst quenching their thirst. For sure the hippos were also plentiful.

After only a short break at Lower Sabie we were already back on the road and stopped once again at Sunset dam were we saw the “silver surfer” again doing what same is loving to do and surfing on the back of a hippo.

Image

The many crocodiles we already saw yesterday somehow got even more and larger overnight, however, our eyes always got back to the grey heron hippo back riding as this was simply so lovely to watch.

Image

Same even took off, circled a bit around

Image

and only to land then on the next hippo's back only three hippos farer away from the one same just was standing on.

Image

After we saw enough from the hippos and the heron we changed our parking position and from where we now stood we could better see the three banded plover

Image

and an african spoonbill which was foraging in the plain water

Image

and according to the small waves on the dam you could adumbrate that it still was extreme windy today. The spoonbill caught a stick and was throwing same up and down after same was undertaken an extensive investigation.

Image

Our monitor friend walked also by extreme close and we always changed from the monitor to the spoonbill and vice versa. Sunset dam is always a fantastic spot to stop but cannot remember having ever seen that much different animals during the whole day there as this year.

It was just so funny to watch this youngster having some fun with the crocs. At the end, he decided to try his luck with a buffalo who came to drink at the dam. He seemed to approve of the buffalo but his luck turned on him as the buffalo chased him back into the water. He soon decided to go back to mommy!
