S143 Tropic of Capricorn and Tihongonyeni waterhole
This piece of Kruger could be a paradise at times, or what we like to call it "Little Masai Mara", but sometimes a barren waist land just before the start of the rainy season.
Show us your Tropic of Capricorn and Tihongonyeni experiences this month.

Here is Tihongonyeni...indeed an unusual and barren area!
A complex of pans and such, with the water reservoir right in the middle!

From an old TR!
On the way down, I decided on the spur of the moment to visit Tihongonyeni, a famous waterhole North of Mopane to which I had never been!
You turn East on the Tropic of Capricorn loop, and it becomes progressively more desolate and LONELY the further you go!
Oh, to be at a LIT sighting outside Skukuza gate in a queue of schoolbuses and taxis right now, I thought to myself! :(
I started suspecting I was far away from civilization when I came accross the skeletons of some members of the French Foreign Legion, poor B$%&ards! :?
Upon reaching the Windmill after a few days, I realised the place seemed to be a piece of Kalahari Desert airlifted to Kruger in what appears to be some bizarre experiment!
It's bad enough driving through the Park alone, but REALLY being in the middle of nowhere is scary...especially when you've been with your family constantly for 5 days!

Re: Flavour of the month: June 2015 - S143 Tropic of Caprico
However, the trip to the "Hongo" was starting to get me a little nervous, as it was becoming increasingly lonely!
So I pulled an old friend out of one of the two huge coolers on my back seat, just to calm the nerves!
Upon approaching the spot, a Rare sighting, striding majestically through the scrub, proudly eking out a living in what is obviously one of the last refuges of this magnificent creature!!
:

Kori Bustards are on the Big 7 list or something...so lovely to see!
Then about 30 metres further on...:

Then, 30m further on, another one....and then another couple.....and so forth...
I could only be sure of a minimum six of them in that area, as they were wandering about all over the place, posing and flirting and not looking terribly endangered at all! Ei
