Rest camp at Klein Mooimaak site, West Coast National Park

Proposed development of rest camp at Klein Mooimaak site, West Coast National Park

SANParks have started the process of developing the Klein Mooimaak site in the West Coast National Park as a rest camp. Klein Mooimaak is the beach below and on the far side of the lookout point at Zeeberg. The Kleinmooimaak rest camp will include the construction of 15 accommodation units, 20 camping and caravan sites, bulk services (water, sewer, electricity) and internal roads. The Kraalbaai day visitors’ site will include the construction of an office, staff accommodation, day visitors’ ablution and the upgrade of parking. The site is on the eastern shore of the lagoon. Another step towards comercialisation of the parks

You can register as an interested and affected party with Monique Sham of KHULA Environmental Consultants (the company doing the environmental impact assessments) to get the full information and to have your say: moniquesham@gmail.com.

Monique Sham of KHULA Environmental Consultants says there are no plans available from SANParks yet.

“The first step is the EIA. Klein Mooimaak is the beach below and on the far side of the lookout point at Zeeberg. Whilst we totally support the idea that the park needs a rest camp, particularly with camping sites, they are proposing to build 20 chalets and put in sewerage, electricity etc as well — this will have a big impact on the character of the park on this until now undeveloped side of the lagoon. Our opinion is that they should rather go for a ‘touch the earth lightly’ approach with fewer chalets, solar power, compost toilets etc.”

Interesting that those who are supposed to do the EIA are apparently not really for this development.
Wonder how it is that some biased organization (or at least employees of the same) are allowed to conduct the EIA. :-?
I would expect them to be neutral...
(Not that I was opposed to that, just thinking O** )

Also, 20 chalets and beach got me thinking of an earlier article where there was talk of 20 homes for soldiers and
something about revitalising the beachfront... Is this what we are talking about here. :-?

Sorry, I don't have any source for that - was just my opinion (or what I thought to be common sense :o0ps: ).

Not a bad opinion at all Mel..when it comes too the initial screening stages of the
process,....I have my opinions too,...
Mel wrote:there are no plans available from SANParks yet
How can a proper EIA be conducted then or are Sanparks fishing again???

Only too alter the screening process too suit afterwards.

Public participation only comes in at the final stages. Too revert back
to the beginning (Screening stages) and uplift or change what has being
laid down as the rule or criteria for discussion,... well,.. will be a difficult
task. Currently as standards are, would you look a "gifted horse" in the mouth.

A rather challenging comment??? !!!

H.e., I think the stuff I quoted is older and not valid any longer.
I mainly quoted it because the fact that the person working for the company
who will conduct the EIA said that they are not in favour of the chalets.
