It's another trial run for a possible long-term money generating activity, IMO. 0-

Never been to Marakele and know nothing about that park apart that it must
be absolutely beautiful.

Anybody able to say whether this marathon is equally 0- to the cycle challenge in KTP or not?

Presumably it is on roads, like the Skukuza Marathon, and doesn't last long, so not as 0-

Do the calcs.
1000 runners, if everyone ran the 42 k marathon = R114,000. Admittedly not everyone will run the 42, so the income would be a bit less, but not a bad effort for a few hours on a Saturday morning on behalf of the HR's. It is more than one branch would probably make in a whole year under normal circumstances.
I am afraid these things will become the norm for our parks.

If they stick to the roads which are few and far between in Marakele it wont be an ecological problem, but if I had booked and paid to spend some time up there, enjoying a quiet game drive only to come across 1000 runners jogging up the road, I would certainly demand my money back.

1000 runners would get me upset as well!!

Now imagine all the empty energy drink sachets lying on the road once they pass, it will take a huge team to clean that mess up quickly, so another few hundred people on the roads. 0*\

:O^ These new recreational activities, sports events or cultural events might be disigned to generate new visits or to connect with non-traditional NP visitors or to generate income. And I would support small or even medium-sized events if these events don't damage the environment and don't disturb the nature experience of non-participants or other visitors. And don't tell us, that an event for 1000 runners does not have an impact on the experience of other park visitors. I am all in favor for events with a potential to create a meaningful experience of nature or to enhance learning. Is this the case with larger sport events? -O- I don't think so :-?

I have attended many marathon events in my life. The thing I like the most is the way they manage the {event space} and the crowd of audience. What do you like?
