SANParks must get to the source of the problem and do something about it!!!

Re: Snares in Kruger
Thula Thula Rhino Fund
Snares - the silent killer in any game reserve. When humans are to blame for the plight of the animals we act immediately. What does such an operation entail? A helicopter flies in from Hluhluwe around 50km away. The vet arrives from Mtubatuba around two hours by car. The entire operation entails 6 people, takes around 2 hours and costs R 40.000. How do we pay for this? Firstly the fees our Volunteers pay at the Thula Thula Volunteer Academy, second your donations and thirdly your monthly contributions to the South African Conservation Fund.
Lucifer our injured buffalo bull and all of us thank you for your continued support! As you all are making a difference to ensure that wildlife has a chance of survival.

Hyena found, darted and snare around its neck removed. The rangers and vets are my heroes. They really work day and night and mostly hear how useless they are. I think they are magicians and angels, this was a record rescue for an elusive animal like a hyena.

Re: Snares in Kruger
Hyenas are very exposed to snares being curious and eating almost anything
Aren't snares mostly put out for antelopes? If yes, what is the bait?

Re: Snares in Kruger
The snares are just put along a game path where it narrows between bushes, Lis. So quite random except for the height at which it is set. It seems hyenas operate more or less at the height that small game does, so bad luck for them. They are very strong, so break a snare instead of just dying like a buck. They also don't have many whiskers, which would presumably help to detect a snare?

Re: Snares in Kruger
Whatever, those snares are terribly cruel and laying out out snares should be treated like poaching!!
