Re: Land Claims in Kruger

Now here is the thing.

I bet virtually all of those community members indirectly benefit, and have done for decades, from the economic input Kruger brings to the area. And they will have a family member who is directly employed in the supply chain that feeds off Kruger.

At no stage have they called for Kruger to be broken up, and undertsand. That is a SANParks bugbear to acquire funding and/or justify commercialisation.

The pic below from the venue tells the real story, political reward-reaping by the ruling ANC. Money for votes, in my opinion.

Extracts from a better article from Elize Parker:

R84 million is paid to Kruger land claimants

Mr Perry Sambo, a representative of the Mpumalanga claimant communities, said that it was a historic day of celebration. “We have been waiting for this day for 18 years. We are grateful to our leaders who patiently negotiated this good deal for us. We ask you to ensure that the institutional and development programmes that are part of the final compensation do not collapse. We hope that this will also bring the scourge of poaching to an end,” Sambo said.

Before the award ceremony, Ms Edna Molewa, minister for environmental affairs, addressed stern words , “Show some Leadership!” to ANC marshalls who fixed a 10 metre long ANC banner to the pedestals in front of the stage. It had the potential to turn the celebration for the impending settlement of land into an ANC event. The banner was removed after her stern admonishment just to reappear when marshals held it up to the cheering crowd.

Party T-shirts and other regalia were handed to participants of the event and green and gold decked tables and chairs were seen everywhere.

The bill for more than 100 buses, catering, and entertainment was footed by the Department of Rural Development & Land Reform.

I checked the rates today. Here a non-luxury bus costs about R3500 to hire for the day. Assuming .gov got a discount, 100 buses would have cost at least a quarter of a million, conservatively...taxpayers' money. Combined with entertainment and catering, the simple cost would have been R500 000 IMO.

This does not include the ghastly expenses of carting the VIPs and their entourages around...

All taxpayers' money that could actually have been given extra to the communities! @#$

I believe Skukuza was left in a total mess O/ O/

Land Claims...... 0*\ Many cultures in other parts of the world were fighting over land, etc as a measure of prosperity 500 years ago. I think our culture is a little behind the rest of the world and stuck in the dark ages. People should be more concerned about education, hard work, etc to move forward. O/
