New vehicles for Kruger park
Written by defenceWeb, Monday, 14 May 2018
The Kruger National Park has taken delivery of 250 vehicles from Toyota which will be used for conservation and tourism-related duties in the park, from game viewing to medical evacuation.
The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park (KNP) Glenn Phillips officially received the new vehicles on 11 May in Skukuza. The vehicles include 63 Toyota light duty vehicles (pick-up, vans and mini buses), Toyota Hilux double cabs, 74 4x4 Single Cabs, eight Land Cruiser pick-ups, 17 Toyota commuter buses, six Hino buses, 60 Toyota Hilux nine-seater game viewing vehicles, a Toyota Sedan, four Toyota ambulances and two Hino Trucks.
“KNP has traditionally used Toyota vehicles for many years; the relationship between us and the vehicle dealer comes from humble beginnings and has stood the test of time. In 2002, South African National Parks (SANParks) outsourced the fleet to VUSWA who introduced LDVs of another brand but later re-introduced the Toyota fleet, because the vehicles proved to be reliable and durable in our terrain. VUSWA’s contract with SANParks ended in 2015 and we then decided to in-source our fleet, purchasing a new consignment of vehicles from Toyota”, said Phillips.
“At the end of last year, Toyota donated four special visitor management vehicles to the KNP at a time when the Park was busy and needed such vehicles for visibility on the roads”, Phillips said.
The KNP’s vehicle fleet includes 371 vehicles, which range in size and models from light commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles to those that provide medical services.

Re: Vehicle Fleet Management in Kruger
The fleet management structure of Kruger is a very lucrative business, and has had its ups and downs. Nissan took over in a controversial tender deal in 2002, with Vuswa being linked to Zuma himself via Nkandla:

It is miles better for SANParks to run their own fleet, as in the old days.
