SAHeritage: Flagship Kruger National Park set to honour its 120-year-old conservation legacy

The annual Kruger National Park (KNP) Achievement Awards, honouring the Park's employees who excelled in their respective field of work in the past year or over a long period, took place on Friday, 18 May in Skukuza.

The 19th Awards ceremony paid acknowledgement to those KNP employees who showed determination, productiveness and good attitude to their work.

KNP Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips says that these employees have performed "beyond their call of duty in their respective field of work", adding that the ceremony also brings together various stakeholders who support SANParks in its conservation mandate.

Phillips also announced that the launch of the Kruger's 120 years centenary celebration, which is going to commence in two weeks time, saying it is a "milestone which makes all of us in the KNP very excited to part of."

Kruger's conservation roots legacy started in back in 1898, when the Volksraad of the ZAR Republic created the Sabie Game Reserve area between crocodile river and Sabie River, says William Mabasa Head of Communications for SANParks Kruger.

Later create the Shingwedzi Reserve. In 1926 the land between Olifants River and Letaba was added to the two game reserves to create what has now become South Africa's flagship national park, Kruger.

Award categories and winners

A numbers of awards were given to KNP staff who excelled in the categories of "outstanding in the workplace" and "outstanding service to clients" in the past year or over a long period. Here's a list of the winners in some of the most prestigious award categories:

- Lifetime Achievement Award - Robert Phoku. He received a standing ovation for 44 years of service, having joined KNP in 1974 as a driver in the Technical Services Department.

Finalists go through a selection process based on a set of stringent assessment criteria. "Apart from their extra mile achievements, individual nominees had to possess qualities such as independent and progressive thinking, initiative and creativity, a positive approach to work, leadership and ability to interact at all levels regardless of training and skills," says KNP in a statement.

For facilities, awards are judged on overall performance, implementation of various systems, financial performance and management, guest complaints and compliments, compliance to policies and general neatness, adds KNP.
