Henk Bredenoord (HB) Premier Hotels,...

Attended the Groenkloof meet,...commercialization is on the cards!!!
Sanparks are no longer capable of footing the tourism bill!!
Mel wrote:Well, if it was already admitted at the last meeting at Groenkloef that the to-be-built lodge might be privatised,
I reckon, this is as good as a definite answer to the privatising aspect.

Media Release: SANParks gives out schools facilities to learners

Date: 2016-03-22

The science lab is meant to enhance science learning and teaching at the school with the view of improving the standard and quality of education especially in rural communities.

“When in the past our approach to community development was more on providing access to benefits that accrue from our business, we have now added the issue of Corporate Social Investment which enables us to provide facilities and other resources that are identified as needs in a specific community for the benefit of the whole community”, said the Kruger National Park Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips on behalf of SANParks.

This science lab handover follows another of school facilities worth over a million rand which the Chief Executive Officer of SANParks, Fundisile Mketeni handed over to Takheleni Primary School (kitchen facility) and Sibusisiwe High (science lab) Schools at Matsulu village in the Mpumalanga Province on Tuesday, 15 March 2016.

Phillips indicated that SANParks will continue to diversify participation by empowering groups of people in the local communities who have never benefitted from SANParks’ community development programmes. These Corporate Social Investment (CIS) programmes support government’s mandate towards community development and is also in line with SANParks’ vision “A sustainable National Park system connecting to Society”

“The country’s resources need to be spread equally amongst all the people so that we can make a contribution in building a new and better society of our country. We need to find a common and sustainable approach of channelling the CSI programmes in a way that contributes to improved socio-economic situation in our communities. This is the step that all of us must take in order to realize the kind of society that we want and that which the rural poor wants to live in, continued Phillips.

In 2013, similar projects in both Mpumalanga and Limpopo including the Administration block at Dumisani high school in Mkhuhlu, a playground to Takheleni Primary School in Matsulu as well as a computer lab at Mbaula High School outside Phalaborwa were also developed and donated by SANParks.

In closing, Phillips urged the educators and learners to use the new facility responsibly. “You are currently the guardian of this building; we hope you will look after these facilities and put them to good use. We want to see returns on our investment - into the future”.

Limpopo - On Thursday 10 March 2016, South African National Parks (SANParks) joined by the Department of Education in Limpopo celebrated the handover of a new state of the art science laboratory to Groenvlei Secondary School in Thabazimbi.

The hand-over is part of SANParks Corporate Social Investment (CSI) which supports communities that are adjacent to its National Parks. Groenvlei Secondary is adjacent to the Big Five Marakele National Park, situated just outside Thabazimbi. SANParks charges 1% Community Levy on all reservations for accommodation and activities in order to fund these projects.

Speaking at the event which was attended by politicians, Department of Education officials and school children, SANParks Chief Executive Mr Fundisile Mketeni said “We attribute the success of national Parks to the communities that live close by. They make us shine and it is therefore befitting that we plough back by contributing to the education of their children.”

The laboratory valued at over R800 000.00 will accommodate 50 children at any given time and will enrich their level of education through the utilization of variety of Science materials to boost their level of understanding regarding Science Knowledge.

The Chief Executive further outlined the different SANParks poverty alleviation projects in communities neighbouring national Parks. “Programs such as Working for Water and many provide the much needed employment in various communities, and we are glad that we can be of assistance.”

He concluded his remarks by extending an invitation to the Department of Education to bring learners to Marakele and all the Parks for the different Environmental Education programmes and also encouraged learners to consider careers in conservation and become part of SANParks in the future.

Ms Madela, who is the Department of Education District Manager, said “We are truly grateful to SANParks for this wonderful donation to the Province. We pledge to take care of it, so that it doesn’t only serve the class of 2016 but many more learners who are still coming and surrounding schools as Groenvlei has been identified as one of the Science Centres.”

SANParks will be handing over another Science laboratory to Hlakulani Secondary School in Giyani in the next week.

On Friday 22 January 2016, children and staff members from Medi Care Creche in Clarens were all jubilant after a generous donation of equipment and educational toys from Golden Gate Highlands National Park (GGHNP).

Although the items are not brand new, they had been lying in the Park unused for some time and donating it to a worthy institution seemed like the best idea. Soccer balls, dolls, bicycles and writing board slates are some of the items that were donated to the creche.

The creche has 38 children (between the ages of 8 months and 5 years) and four educators and was launched in 2008 and caters for the children from the surrounding farms and Fouriesburg. Since its inception they have been struggling to get some of the basic equipment to use for the children’s learning and development.

Golden Gate has been on a mission to live out the organisation’s vision of “A sustainable National Park System connecting society” and grabs any opportunity available to give back to the community. Thus far education seems to be the main beneficiary. In the past the Park donated school shoes to the children in the neighbouring schools.

Victor Mokoena, Acting Park Manager of GGHNP, said the donation was one of the many projects that SANParks gets involved in to assist the communities adjacent to the Parks, "We are very proud to see all these happy smiles here today and we hope we could do more to see every child in our community this happy” he said.

Managing Director of the Creche, Meisie Khumalo was ecstatic at the donation “we are very grateful to SANParks for all they have given us, we hope it will really have a positive impact on our children.”

In December 2015 as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility project, the organisation handed a fully fledged science laboratory to a school in Clarens.

Media Release: KNP Stakeholders come together for a clean environment

06 July 2018

Kruger National Park (KNP) in partnership with Total South Africa hosted the “Keep Kruger Clean” (KKC) campaign at Luphisi, a village outside Nelspruit on 4 July 2018. The aim of this campaign is to educate and create awareness about the dangers of spoiling the environment such as the national parks and other habitats. The campaign is a continuation of the World Environmental Day (WED) commemoration which takes place on 5 June every year.

“This year’s WED theme “beat plastic pollution – if you can’t reuse it, refuse it”, urges people to explore sustainable alternatives meant to reduce the production and excessive use of single use plastic products. South African government introduced the pricing of plastic a few years ago to beat pollution; and continues to raise the price to encourage recycling”, said the KNP’s GM: Communications and Marketing, William Mabasa on behalf of the KNP Management.

Mabasa also emphasised to stakeholders the issue of taking care of nature, including all things that live in it. Biodiversity is important, our plants and animals can be negatively influenced by habitat loss and degradation due to human activities such as pollution and poaching.

“This brings me to touch on poaching as we must realize that the extinction of species can also have a negative economic effect on a local community’s tourism industry. Communities that rely on their wildlife for employment and to attract tourists are at great risk for economic hardship if the prevalence of poaching continues. This is a socio-economic issue as tourists could stay away if poaching is a real threat and could have a detrimental effect on a community’s economy since local business structures would suffer. I encourage everybody to speak up. Whenever we have gatherings in our communities, let us encourage each other to always ask questions and get the facts before accepting any wildlife or plant product offered to us”, concluded Mabasa.

The KKC campaign has allowed stakeholders including school kids from the neighbouring communities to take part by collecting litter in areas where they live. With Total SA as a dedicated sponsor since the inception of the KKC campaign, the partnership has brought positive impact as awareness building materials such as brochures and rubbish bags with litter messages continue to be handed out to guests on daily basis upon entry to the park. SANParks is also celebrating the 60 year partnership with Total SA this year; various activities and competitions are in place to encourage everybody to take a minute out of their day to do something good for the environment.
