I saw a later report saying the lion had been darted, with a photo of a lion lying on the road. Turned out this was fake news! 0*\

Police deny reports of lion on the loose in Mpumalanga

South Africa
Wednesday 30 May 2018 - 8:13am

JOHANNESBURG – Mpumalanga police on Wednesday denied reports that a lion was on the loose.

It followed speculation on Tuesday night that there was a lion on the prowl in the province after pictures of the animal, which was allegedly spotted and captured near the R37, went viral on social media.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi questioned the authenticity of the pictures.

"There are reports that those pictures are from 2015 when a lion escaped from a zoo. I cannot confirm that, but what I can say is as far as we are concerned there is no lion on the loose in Mpumalanga," he said.

The South African Police Service's official Twitter account on Wednesday morning revealed that authorities were deployed to a scene where a stray lion was allegedly spotted along the De Aar–Hanover road in the Northern Cape by a motorist.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Mohale Ramatseba, however, could not confirm whether a lion was actually on the loose in that province.

"We are still verifying the information at the moment, so I cannot confirm anything. I am busy talking to colleagues and finding out more information on this," he said.

Mbombela on high alert as lion escapes from Kruger National Park

Post by Lisbeth »

He was last seen roaming on the R37.

By Tom Head - 2018-05-30

Residents of Mbombela are being warned to stay vigilant after it was reported a lion had escaped from Kruger National Park.

The animal was last spotted on the R37 road, around 40km outside of Mbombela – the biggest city in the Mpumalanga province. News24 (via Netwerk24) report that the local traffic department had confirmed that the lion was on the loose.

When lions escape

Sadly, cases like this very rarely have a happy ending. Almost one year ago, three lions who escaped from Kruger National Park were shot dead as they roamed residential areas.

One of the lions was gunned down on a private farm. The other two were in the nearby area, yet the search team were unable to merely tranquilise the lions and had ‘no choice’ but to shoot the escapees dead.

The lion that was shot on the farm wasn’t killed instantly, but rather badly wounded. Rangers made the heartbreaking decision to end his suffering.

In November 2017, two lions were seen on the prowl in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

Eyewitnesses reported that the lions were seen in the pine plantations near Vula-Vula in the Georges Valley area after they escaped. The lions were apparently being transported from one enclosure to another, and at least one was recaptured safely.

No trace of supposed roaming lion - Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency

Rangers from the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency are keeping an eye on Mbombela and the surrounds in search of an alleged roaming lion – which only one person has ostensibly seen.

On Tuesday night, reports emerged of a lion being spotted on the R37, about 40km from Mbombela.

Agency spokesperson Kholo Nkambule said its rangers responded to the tip-off and searched the area. No trace of it was found.

It resumed its operation on Wednesday.

Nkambule said it was suspicious that it appears only one person had supposedly seen the lion, as true sightings are usually reported by a number of witnesses.

Meanwhile, Kruger National Park spokesperson William Mabasa said while it was aware of the reports, it had no record of a lion escaping from their premises.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi told News24 police would also have to be informed of a lion on the prowl. No such incident has however been reported, he said.

Twitter users opted to see the positive in the unconfirmed situation, with some claiming that the supposed rogue lion was the reincarnation of Shamba, which was killed in April after attacking its owner at a private game reserve near Thabazimbi in Limpopo.

UPDATE: Escaped lion still on the loose in the Lowveld
The MTPA confirmed the sighting and they are currently still searching.

MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has just confirmed that the lion that was seen close to Mbombela is still on the loose.

“We can confirm that the various reports stating that the lion was darted and relocated are untrue,” said Juan de Beer, acting senior manager of the MTPA’s Wildlife Protection Services.

Lowvelder also cross-checked the photo that did the rounds last night, and it turns out that the photo of the lion lying in the road dates back to 2015, when a circus lioness escaped in China, and was gunned down.

Officials are following information from three different sources, which confirmed the sighting of the wayward young male lion on the R37 last night. It was last seen about 20 kilometres from Sabie, on the Long Tom Pass.

The search for the lion has not yet bore any fruit, and the MTPA is urging the community to report any sighting to Louw Steyn, on 083-626-6792. “We have no leads as to where the lion’s whereabouts might be,” he said.

De Beer confirmed that the above photo was the actual footage taken by Xander Mulligan, who initially saw the lion on the Long Tom Pass and reported it to the MTPA. He urges the community to practise extreme caution, as this is now considered a danger zone. “We especially urge cyclists and pedestrians to avoid the area,” he said.

He added that their main priority is to capture the lion, and the last resort would be to kill it.

Here is a video of the lion:

Escaped Lion captured at last

MBOMBELA – Hunger eventually led to the wayward young male lion loose in the area successfully being darted and captured not far from where it was first spotted.

Juan de Beer, acting senior manager of the MTPA’s Wildlife Protection Services, confirmed this morning that the lion was seen again, this time after killing a cow near the Long Tom Pass on the R37.

The MTPA was informed and veterinarian Dr Ferreira du Plessis and carnivore scientist Gerrie Camacho went in search for it. Although the young male hid in thick bushes, they managed to dart it successfully.

Upon examining the animal, they found some slight injuries, hence it was transported to a rehabilitation facility first. It will also be tested for TB.

Once fully recuperated, they will decide where it would be released again.

Lowvelders were kept on their toes for almost a week after the sighting of the young male lion on the R37 was first reported about 20 kilometres from Sabie, on the pass.

Earlier reports, even accompanied by a photo of the “darted” lion, were soon proofed as fake.
