Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp

Post by Bushcraft »

Crocodile Bridge is a small camp in the south east corner of the park, but don’t let this put you off staying there as there are a number of good game viewing roads in the area.

A major disadvantage is the fact that you can still see the farm land and sugar cane fields on the opposite bank, but if you choose your accommodation carefully you will hardly notice it.

There’s a small shop which offers most of what you will require and there’s a small takeaway section also.

There are 20 x 2 and 3 sleeper bungalows, 8 x 2 sleeper safari tents and 15 camp sites, so again this camp doesn’t cater for larger families, which is a pity IMO.

Bungalows

The bungalows are fully equipped with utensils, fridge, hotplate, etc and all are en suite.

Only 2 of the 20 bungalows are 2 sleepers (17 and 18 ), they are for the disabled and on the fence line, but no river view. Of the remaining 18 units, 9 face the Crocodile River (1 to 9), 7 face the fence (10 to 16) and 2 are in the middle of the camp (19 and 20)

Personally I don’t fancy the river facing units due to the fact that they look onto buildings and farmland, so for me the units on the fence line are better, with 10 or 14 the best IMO.

Unit 9 is in the corner of the camp, so it offers the best of both worlds.

Safari Tents

6 of the 8 tents are in a half moon shape all looking at each other (1 to 6), with 1 and 2 the worst as they are close to the petrol station, etc. The last 2 tents 7 and 8 are definitely the best and are at the other end of the camp on the fence between the last bungalow and the camping section.
They have a fridge, fan, etc, but one has to use the communal ablutions.

Camping

The camp sites are level and there’s enough shade available. 6 of the 15 sites are next to the fence, with the best section closer to safari tents 7 and 8

Croc Bridge is not the most attractive camp ever, but it is probably the one where you are guaranteed to see the biggest variety of game at ANY time of year, as heavy grazing nearby keeps the grass reasonably short, combined with the fact that the soil composition in the area is quite unique in Kruger, for various reasons!

Also possibly the highest all-round predator concentration at the moment after Skukuza?

A definite go-to in the wet months!

What to look for:

Cheetah, zebra

Delagoa thorn

Fish eagle

I liked it! Never had such a good "take away" breakfast under the trees with all the birds chirping. OK, it was my first vist to Kruger

Forgot.... The next morning we had a great lion sighting just outside the camp

Love this camp, only irritation when camping next to fence is the up and down movement of official park vehicles on dirt road next to fence and loud talking of workers on the back of the vehicles. Maybe it was just me but there is this irritating motorized sound that comes from I don't know where, I think from the sugar cane farm across the river. It sounds like a pump or something. For game viewing I give this camp a 5/5 for game viewing and you can quickly slip to Komatipoort to go and buy some foods and refreshments if you run out without paying an arm or a leg like in the park shops.

What Nigel Dennis (Where to Watch Game in the Kruger National Park) says about Crocodile Bridge:
The Crocodile Bridge area is probably one of the most underrated in the entire Park. I have had consistently good sightings here. However, it was only when I started to assess the routes in the region for this guide that I realised that almost every road warranted either a good or excellent rating! As well as having a high density of general game, there is an excellent chance of seeing all of the Big Five in this area.

The camp itself is a delightful spot, green and well shaded. Crocodile Bridge is a fairly small camp, and as such does not have its own restaurant, but the shop at camp reception is well stocked.

Only a couple of kilometres north of Crocodile Bridge on the H4-2, the Gesanftombi Dam attracts large numbers of game. Many rate the H4-2 tar road through to Lower Sabie as one of the most productive in the entire park. The S28 Nhlowa Road is a good choice, as there is a fair chance of seeing cheetah and white rhino along this road, as well as plenty of other game.

The S25 Crocodile River road is another prime route. Leopard are likely to be seen in the early morning and late afternoon, and lion are plentiful along the entire route. A few kilometres from the camp along the S25, a short track (S27) branches to the left, leading to a Hippo Pool. Here a field ranger is on duty daily to escort visitors on the short walk to view the hippos close-up.

Although the immediate area around Crocodile Bridge teems with game, the camp makes a good base from which to make longer trips to other excellent areas.
