Mpila camp in the Imfolozi section has 12 x 2 bed upgraded en suite chalets fully equipped with utensils and kitchenette, 6 x 5 sleeper 2 bedroom chalets fully equipped, 2 x 7 sleeper 3 bedroom cottages, 13 x 2 bed en suite safari tents and 2 x 4 bed en suite tents both with a fully equipped kitchen attached via a wooden deck.

A generator provides power between 7am and 10pm, so if you want to get an early start, take a torch to get ready in the morning. The units do have a small paraffin lamp though, but it isn’t adequate.

The camp has no fence, so it can get rather interesting at night when having a braai. I have had meat stolen off the braai on 2 occasions, but I find that if you man the braai all the time with a torch then the hyena keep their distance. Watch out for the bushpigs though as they aren’t as shy, but usually only make an appearance late at night. I hope that this camp stays this way as it adds to the “wild” feel, but make sure that small kids remain indoors after sunset.

The camp “gate” times are 6am – 6pm in the winter and 5am – 7pm in summer, but because there are no gates and the entry/exit space isn’t manned, many seem to just do their own thing.

The water at the moment isn’t fit for consumption, so take plenty of bottled water, or purchase some at the little curio shop, but it’s almost as if there’s an angle for money to be made at R19 per litre.

Each of the units that I have stayed in has had a booklet explaining things and the duty manager’s number is on the front. I have called the duty manager before because of an issue and things were resolved in a minute which was a pleasant surprise.

IMO it’s an awesome spot and well worth a visit.

ACCOMMODATION - MPILA

Mpila consists of 2 seven-bed self-contained cottages,
6 five-bed self-contained chalets,
12 two bed chalets and 13 two and 2 four-bedded tented safari camps.

The cottages consist of three bedrooms,bathroom and shower,lounge,dining room and kitchen.

The five bed chalets consist of two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge, dining room and kitchen.
Each unit has its own barbeque area.

The 2 bed chalets are equipped with a bathroom and kitchenette.
There is no cook in attendance, but the units are serviced daily.

The tented safari camp each have an en-suite bathroom and kitchen and dining area connected via a board walk .
An optional third bed is available in each tent, for a child only.

The units are serviced daily.


2012-2013 RATES IN IMFOLOZI MPILA



iMFOLOZI (Mpila): A daily Conservation Levy of R120 per adult per day and R60 per child < 12 yrs). Children < 3 yrs no charge. This replaces the park permit fee at this Park. SA and SADC residents who provide proof of identity will be charged half price per day.

R1730/night 2012 for my family of 5 (more expensive than SANParks)

R1730/night 2013 for my family of 5 (Cheaper than SANParks)

And I have just booked for 2014 and guess what R1730/night for my family of 5 (Definitely cheaper than SANParks)

The 5 sleeper units are of the same quality, if not better.

We stayed in one of the 2-bed safari tent where you can arrange for a 3rd person where as at Kruger you need to book two Units.

We paid R960 for 3 people in a Safari tent. At Kruger Safari tents Lower Sabie it will cost R1350 for 3 people. Ok the size is not the same but the fact is that you need to spend more.
