I have never got around to asking before, but why have they built those horrible concrete containers for the elephants?

Those are the reservoirs for the flat cement drinking troughs for all the animals. A pipe and valve lead from the big "dam" as required. \O

Yes, I have seen that in several photos. Maybe the water has a better taste without hyenas haven taken a bath in it ;-)
