Flavour of the Month - July 2013: Biyamiti Weir

Post by Sharifa »

The Biyamiti Weir is situated on the Biyamiti River on the S114 road. Biyamiti Camp is a mere 18km away and the nearest camp to the Weir.

For me the cherry on the cake is if we can secure a few nights at Biyamiti. The reason being, that we are sure to be first at the Weir early in the morning.
The setting of the road on the Weir makes it possible to get some amazing eye level photos. The surrounding area also has been very productive for us. We have seen black rhino, lions, ellies, buffalos and leopards in and around the riverbed. Birdlife is abundant and there is a resident fish eagle pair at the Weir.

We have seen the Weir at its driest and at its most powerful when in flood

From Nigel Dennis' "Where to watch game in the Kruger National Park":
I recommend that you follow the S114 right the way through to the Biyamiti Weir. This is a wonderful spot to watch and photograph water birds at a very close range. Klipspringer inhabit the surrounding koppies and leopard sightings are frequently reported.

A weir is like a low dam, but designed just to keep a certain level of water, with the rest sloshing over the top! :-)

Thanks, Sharifa! \O

You can see the silly loops, and the road to Biyamiti Camp going down bottom right! The North-South road is the S-114. :-)
