Granokop

Alternative name for Mathekenyane hill and viewpoint on the H1-1.

Oubaas Kushke renamed the hill when they built the new tar road past it. The meaning is unclear but probably to do with the granitic soils and koppies there.

Hippo Pools

At the end of the S27 just off the S25 Crocodile River Road. Here you have a broad view of the Crocodile River and you can alight from your vehicle.

There is normally a guard on duty who can show you the San art on the rocks overlooking the river. Unfortunately most of this art was washed away during the floods in 2000.

Hillside Waterhole

The Hillside Waterhole is one of a small cluster of waterholes along the H10, close to Lower Sabie Camp. Birdlife in this area is prolific during late summer and there area sometimes unusual sightings like Black Cougal, which appears in years of good rainfall. Hillside was named by Dr U de v Pienaar in 1980.

Large herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra can often be seen in the area.

Hamilton's Tented Camp

This is an unfenced, private camp in the Mluwati concession in Kruger, south-east of Talamati Bushveld Camp, overlooking the Nwatswitsonto River.

Hlahleni Stream

Tributary of the Bangu a few km north of Bangu windmill, crossing the S-90.

The name means “place where kindling firewood can be found” and is Shangaan of origin. The similarity to the Zulu word “umHlahle” should also be taken into consideration, as this word is the name given to the Mitzeerie tree Bridelia micrantha, also known as Brown Stinkwood. In Tsonga it means “at the dry brushwood”. (Van der Wateren)


There is also a Hlahleni Stream that flows into the Letaba River at the Matambeni Bird Hide.

Also a tiny Hlahleni tributary of the Ripape that enters it near Vutomi Dam.
