Dzombo east and west Dams

The Dzombo West waterhole is located on the S144 (old main road). The Dzombo East dam and Dzombo West waterhole are next to the Dzombo river, which had one of the Magnificent Seven named after him.

This elephant roamed this area around Shingwedzi. His left tusk weighed 55,5kg and his right tusk 56,8kg. He was shot by poachers in 1983, but his tusks were never recovered.

Doornplaat

The name of the last large camp on the cards for construction in Kruger, even appearing on a map or two in the early 1990s. The intended site was northwest of Tshokwane, the logical 'missing link" in the chain of large camps along the H1 from south to north every 60 km or so. Central Government funds were not secured, however, so the project came to nought. There were also potential water and logistical problems.

Engelhard Dam

The Engelhard Dam is a large concrete weir in the Letaba River, east of the Letaba Restcamp, and is named for an American millionaire businessman, Charles Engelhard, who donated funds to the National Parks Board for its construction in the 1970s. Its main function is to regulate water flow down the Letaba River in the direction of Mozambique.

Elandskuil Waterhole

Punda Maria Section.
While not easy to see on the photograph there is a very well beaten path down to the drinking place. The trampling is almost certainly the work of elephants that like travel down the same paths to water sources.
