Cape Town - A zoo elephant released into the Gondwana Game Reserve has died and experts are trying to determine the cause of death.
Thandora was held in captivity for 23 years before she was released into the wild this year with high hopes that she would adapt to the environment.
However, experts from Conservation Global were shocked and distraught to find that she had died.
"I am shattered having endured 36 hours of emotional rollercoaster that ended at 05h30 this morning," Greg Vogt from Conservation Global told News24 after finding the elephant dead.
A post mortem has been carried out and the results may reveal Thandora's cause of death.
There had been wide expectations that Thandora would live out several years on the reserve and there were indications that she had joined a herd.
It is unclear whether the death will impact on further efforts to re-introduce captive animals in SA back into the wild.

Sometimes it’s not until you don’t see what you want to see, that you truly open your eyes.

23 years is a long time nan, but depending on what conditions she was held in whilst in captivity, it could be done. Owala, one of the herd matriarchs in Pilanesburg was in a circus in America for 18 years before she was shipped home and set free.
Man was placed in charge and given the duty of caring for all creation, are we doing it?

Ellie close encounters
Just seen these on the 4X4 Community Forum
This is what you can expect if you have fruit in your car in Botswana. The ellies up there don't usually get the taste of fruit. But with all the stupid tourists visiting places like Moremi and feeding the ellies they have become addicted to it.
The following 2 pics show an ellie searching for apples that the driver of the vehicle was seen feeding him earlier that afternoon
The following 2 pics shows an ellie also looking for fruit that was in the car. The stupidity of the photographer is unparalleled. He/she is so lucky that the flash from the camera didn't startle the ellie. If it had the lady would be no more. People just don't think
Please don't take fruit into these places, elephant can smell it from kilometers away and because of dumb humans they could be put down
