Re: AW Pilanesberg Meet 23-29 September 2013
WEDNESDAY 2 OCTOBER 2013. Part 1/2
We woke up to one of those stunning African mornings that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.
Pete insisted that we head down to where we saw the kori bustard yesterday in the hope that it would still be around.
On the way down we stopped at Mankwe Dam.
Goliath heron.
With an Egyptian goose taking off in the background.
It was very interesting to watch this wheatear collecting twigs and leaves for his nest. The most interesting part was to watch as he ducked down a hole in the ground and popped out again a few seconds later to go and fetch more nesting material. I did not know that wheatears nest underground in old rat or snake holes. Unfortunately he was so quick when going in and out of the whole we could not get a shot of him partly in the hole.
Red-breasted swallow.
Another pic of the barn owl in Mankwe Hide.
Pearl-breasted swallow at Mankwe Hide.
A large crocodile seen from Mankwe Hide.
Marico flycatcher seen at Pilanesberg Centre.
This little fellow stole half of Joans breakfast. Joan had taken her eye off her food to look at the bird above and within a second he had whizzed down snatched her food and sat a few metres way eating it.
Oh, by the way, the kori bustard was nowhere to be seen.
NEXT: More birds with a few animals thrown in.

Form, color and size of the bill. Color scheme including legs and eyes. Distribution and habitat. Once you are sure of the family open your book and search. Lots of practice. I am doing the bird ID challenges on the SPF, which is a fantastic school
