Identification
38-46 cm. Massive red bill and frontal shield, red legs and toes. Bright purplish-blue head and underparts and a green back offset by bright white under-tail coverts.

Diagnostic features are chestnut-rufous throat and forehead, blue-black breast band, glossy steel blue upper parts and deeply forked tail. White windows clearly visible in tail when spread.
Juvenile: Buffy forehead, paler chin and throat and duller and browner upperparts.
Non-br Palearctic migrant. First arrivals in Sept, most in act or early Nov.
