Identification
26–30 cm. Black, long, extremely decurved bill (not red), legs and feets black. Black plumage which in perfect light looks purple glossed. White spotted primaries form a white bar but without an additional white spot (contra some Wood Hoopoes).

237. Red-crested Korhaan Eupodotis ruficrista

Identification
50 cm.
Adult male: The crown is grey. The red crest is rarely visible except on displaying male. Upper parts are brown; feathers have black centres and white chevron marks. The foreneck is grey. The underparts are black except for white patches on each side of the upper breast. The eyes are pale, the bill dark horn and the legs and feet are off-white to grey-green.
Adult female: Similar to the male, but the crown is brown with white flecks, and the neck and upper breast are buff with black flecks, grading to a broad white breast band.

589. Familiar Chat Cercomela familiaris

Identification
14-15 cm. The black bill is short and straight. The legs and feet are black. A dull brown bird, which is paler below. It often has a orange looking patch on the ear-coverts. It has a shortish tail with dark brown centre feathers, and orange-buff outer tail feathers and rump.

108. Red-billed Teal Anas erythrorhyncha

Identification
A dabbling duck. 43–48 cm long, the combination of a dark cap, pale buffy cheeks and red bill is diagnostic. Black cap and nape, pale face, and bright red bill. The body plumage is a dark brown edged with white. The secondary flight feathers are buff with a black stripe across them.
The sexes are similar, but juveniles are duller than adults.

179. (Western) Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus

Identification
Females and juveniles: indistinct face mask, buff underparts with varying degrees of streaking (most adult females tend to have only a very little bit of streaking on the side of the belly and chest). Barred grey on the back and wings.
Adult males: dark slate grey everywhere with paler sometimes silvery primaries (especially noticeable from above) and undertail reddish-brown. Feet, base of bill and eyering red.

Identification
34 cm. A distinctive cuckoo. Glossy black upperparts with a prominent crest. White patch on black wings and white tips to black tail. White underparts. Long graduated tail.
It has two colour morphs, one greyish white to white below with streaked throat, the other (mainly in coastal southern Africa) all glossy black with white wing patch and without white in tail.
Juveniles are browner above and yellowish-white below.

Identification
14 cm. A compact Lark with a stout bill. The face is fairly plain and brown, and the white chin and throat contrast with the plain buff breast.

Identification
15 to 17 cm. Buff-brown streaky upperparts. White or pale buff underparts. Streaked breast. Unstreaked belly and flanks. Boldly patterned face; pale eyestripe, dark malar stripe. Whitish outer tail-feathers. Long pink legs. Slender dark bill with a yellowish base to the lower mandible
Juvenile birds have a blotched breast, scalloping on the upperparts and some streaking on the flanks.
