Day 22… starting 2014 the right way
1 January

I woke up to a wonderful new year, all rested as I went to bed early the previous night as we don’t go to the Kruger to party for new year but to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.
I know about 2 years ago somebody complained on the forum about a staff party that was going on at Satara, so when I booked this camp I joked with some friends that I would be the loudest and rowdiest in camp this time around… but I didn’t hear a thing, this camp was very chilled and I do believe that every visitor had the peace and quiet they wanted.
I didn’t even leave camp when I saw how beautiful the sky is this morning…

Image

And it didn’t stop there, I just couldn’t get enough of the sunrise so I had to take a few more kiekies.

As my petrol light was still on I decided just to go to Girivana dam. It was quiet on the H7, I only saw a steenbokkie on my way to Nsemani.

Image

And the dam in the sunlight

And then on my way to Girivana, it was again very quiet until I reached the dam, there were imps and bobbies enjoying the area and I was happy choosing this spot as my morning view. I also saw some Egyptian geese. I sat here for a few hours. Enjoying the morning air together with my book. Wendy wouldn’t actually believe that I saw for so long at a spot that didn’t have a cat in the vicinity… I wouldn’t have if I had more petrol in my car but I did the best with what I had and it was a really enjoyable morning, it wasn’t the normal morning rush, with wanting to get anywhere and when you had a sighting, sharing it with a few other cars. I sat herein my spot all by myself enjoying the playful impi babies and naughty bobbies all by my lonesome and didn’t have a care in the world.

By 8:00 I decided to get back to camp as I had to move my tent, mum and sis entered Phabeni Gate at 5:30 and were on their way to me, they left Bronkhorstspruit 1:00 in the morning so they had little or no sleep at all….
When I turned back unto the H7 I got another surprise… a Tawny having a late brekkie on the tar. He kept us busy for about 20 minutes until a delivery truck scared him away.

Image

I got back to camp, moved my tent from underneath the gazebo as we had to fit 3 tent entrances under it now and waited… and waited… and waited till 12:00 when they at last arrived. To my surprise little sis was driving, and only because mum heks fell asleep behind the steering wheel!! Just glad they arrived safely, and then I quickly booked them in. I took them to our wonderful scenic camping spot for the next 4 nights. We quickly set up their tents and popped open some ice cold KPA’s, we stayed in camp and had some lunch…

Image

And we had a visitor in camp as well

Image

We stopped for absolutely everything and enjoyed every single sighting we had, it was great having some company for a change…

Then on the road towards Gudzani I got to see the lions that were on the giraffe kill the last 3 days, we didn’t see the giraffe as there were nothing left but a few lions hiding behind bushes and lazying around.

Image

We enjoyed the cats for a while and then had to move on as time wasn’t standing still and now it was time to look for some servals on the S90. Well, we didn’t see any spotted cats on the way back to camp but it was full of many other wonderful animal and birds…

We got home happy with our afternoon drive and started a fire, at least tonight I had some company around my fire and we made mince roosterbroodjies to enjoy that night with ice cold beverages. We also planned our route for the following day, we would go visit Olifants and then take the S139 all the way down to H7 then back to camp. We also had a lot of laughs around the fire as sis was a bit gogga-bang and I spoke about the scorpies and whip-spider and all the creepies I have encountered on the trip… Then she didn’t want to sleep in her own tent, said she will protect my mum against all these crawlies in her tent. But after a few doom sprays she was very happy and we could all go to bed.

To be continued…
