062. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea

Identification
94 cm; sexes alike. White head and hindneck, with black eyebrow and plumes, separate it from Black-headed Heron, which has a black crown and hindneck. In flight entire underwing appears uniform dark grey. Bill becomes bright orange and legs pinkish red at onset of breeding.
Juvenile: Paler grey body, with grey on forehead and crown. Separated from juvenile Black-headed Heron by white ear coverts and yellowish (not black) legs.

064. Goliath Heron Ardea goliath

Identification
1.43 m; sexes alike. Worlds largest heron, almost double the size of Purple Heron. Chestnut head, neck and underparts. Legs and feet black, not yellowish.
Juvenile: Similar to adult but duller. Grey upperparts edged rufous; underparts streaked white.

Identification
95-110 cm. Head, neck, upper breast and upperparts black; lower breast and belly white. The bill, bare skin around the eye, legs and feet are red.

086. Woolly-necked Stork Ciconia episcopos

Identification
84 cm; sexes alike. Only stork in region with black body and white (woolly-looking) neck. In flight, all-black wings and chest contrast with white neck, belly and undertail. Bill tip and ridge of upper mandible red. Upperparts glossed purple and eyes deep crimson red during breading season.
Juvenile: Upperparts duller and browner and face blacker; neck pale sooty brownish.

Identification
60 cm. Black head, brown eye and bill, grey and black throat, black upperparts and long, black legs. Shiny wings. Visible gap between mandibles.

088. Saddle-billed Stork Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis

Identification
1.5 m; sexes similar. Female has bright yellow eyes, male has brown eyes and small pair of yellow pendant wattles at base of bill.
Juvenile: Upperparts initially grey-brown, and bill (including saddle) black or dark brown, lacking any red till at least 6 months; legs greenish.
