Was about to refer to your TT to get more pics going. :ty: Thanks for sharing some of your great shots taken at Rooiputs. I see you are very brave with the ground tent camping. Lovely camp set-up and beautiful shot of hyaena (like the reflection) and leopard. ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^ Any idea what's the leopards name? ;-)
Hi BJ Sorry for the delayed reply
Thanks for the comments

More lions spotted near Rooiputs a few years back in Dec 2008 during our first summer visit to KTP:

I am sorry but the fox den was close to Kij Kij. :-(

Maybe off topic, but not sure where to ask. Can anyone tell me if the Rooiputs campsite is reachable with a 2x4 bakkie. I see varying information....

Thanks :ty:

mma ramotswe it is possible to reach the campsite with a 2x4 bakkie as long as you not towing a heavy off-road caravan. The distance from the road to campsite 1 is only 600 meter and its only a 50 meter section that can be tricky. The last campsite is no 4 and about 1000 meter from the turnoff. After reaching the first campsites the road is not too sandy, but if you worried try the first two numbers. No 5 and 6 can be more difficult to reach.

Yes, but you will need to know how to drive in deep sand, and you will need to deflate your tires.

The problem with this is that this means you will need to drive with deflated tires all the time, possibly shortening the life of your tires badly. If you want to do this, I would strongly advise that you invest in a tire monitoring system that allows you to watch the tire temperatures, and keep them below about 60 degrees C.

If you can get away with 1.5 Br or more, you should be ok though.

Also, there is no way a 2x4 is towing a trailer or caravan up there.

Rooiputs Campsite and waterhole: Lion Heaven

Post by Peter Betts »

For my last 2 trips I have booked campsite 3 (There are 6 far remote from each other sites) at Rooiputs campsites ..Brilliant you have the area to yourself in BEST light early in the morning for an hour while the hordes race in clouds of dust from Twee Rivieren & Kielie Krankie etc to get to where I am parked less than 500 metres from my Trailer tent in an unfenced site with no facilities apart from a longdrop toilet 100 metres from my tent..No queing for permits in the morning and jockeying for FRONT place for SANParks side gate opening ..Being 2nd in the que means you eat dust !! I just idle down the hill at 07h00 in April month where we just book Rooiputs for my lovely lions on my own usually for 14 to 18 nights..This is one of the superb lionesses that walk the Rooiputs area and campsite.
