Re: Snap wild dogs, cheetahs, EWT asks public

Post by KNPWildDogs »

The Previous photographic census was conducted in 2008/2009. A total of 993 entries were received ( 588 for Wild Dogs and 405 for Cheetahs). In the previous census a total of 157 different Wild Dogs were identified and a total of 212 different Cheetahs were identified. The Endangered Wildlife trust started a long term Wild Dog monitoring project to better understand the population and the factors effecting Wild Dog as the population has declined from approximately 435 in 1995. The current focal monitoring of Wild Dogs suggests the population has increased slightly with a current estimate at 233.

Thanks so much!

Would it be ok if members just post their pics here, along with dates and location, even going years back?

NOT for purposes of the competition for best pics, just data?

Some have probably sent their sightings to the ewt email address, a different thing?

I would encourage any member that would like to contribute to the on going Wild Dog research to post photos they have (including details of location, date and number of dogs in the pack) and I will attempt to reply with specific details about the individuals and pack. But any photographs taken of Cheetah and Wild Dog during the Photographic census period needs to be sent to census@ewt.org.za or posted on the facebook group.

Toko I am almost certain the population has increased in number since the 2008/2009 photographic census. the 2014 denning season has been the most successful for the dogs since monitoring started in 2011 with over 100 pups born. The concern is still the lack of sightings in the far north. during the 1995 census 250 Wild Dogs were identified north of the Olifants river in 2008/2009 there were only 12. there are currently three groups north of the olifants river with a total of 28 Dogs. a huge decline from 1995

Out of the timeframe for your survey, but you may be able to tell me who this individual is?

Photographed crossing the Shingwedzi riverbed from the high level bridge on Friday 8th August 2014. This individual is collared, so hope you can help?
