Aat&Elly 2016: 03- Special, Weird & Rare

Post by aat »

*** Travel Tales ***
Trip to Kruger NP 2016 (October – November) New series of Stories

03 – Special, Weird and Rare

Hi all,
After Snow-White, which was a very special sighting we had a few other special (for us) sightings in the Mopani area. All close to Mopani camp.
Not enough to write individual stories but I like to share it with you

(Special)
Maybe.. you remember the story from 2015 about having seen a leopard near Mopani 3 times.
Well, 2016 we saw her again…
This time I could not make many pictures , she just crossed the road in front of us so quality of the pictures is not that good but seeing her again was really great.

Just hoping she did not run away too fast

-

-

In her own environment and probably ready for finding a meal

-

-

Last one before she really turned her tail to us

At home , after cropping the large format pictures and checking with the pictures 2015 I was sure it was her again.

(Weird)
Something completely different:
I read about sleeping Elephants (I mean laying down on the ground and sleeping) but we have never seen it during all trips we made. This time we have seen it 3 times. Two times a big bull and 1 time some together like on the photo here.
When we saw the big bulls we thought something happened to them but after some time they got up in just a few seconds and walked away. It was weird to see this. Is it very common ? We were talking about it in the car but could not remember we have seen it before.

(Rare)
Only once before we have seen Side-Striped Jackal. During this trip we were just mentioning them when we passed the location where we saw them. We were staying in Mopani and on our way for a drive, close to the junction to the Capricorn Loop and Old Main road, we saw one. We were lucky this jackal did not run away quickly but was posing for us for a moment.
Are they rare ?

Time to have a better / good look

Aat great pics as usual \O

About sleeping ellies , it is quite common - . We have seen it quite a few times - especially babies . They like to have a little sleep :-) just like human babies
A couple years ago , we came round a bend , and there was a car , and the people stopped us saying , pointing to an ellie lying a few hundred meters away . The guy said the ellie suddenly lay down and he thinks it is dead 0*\ But through my binocs I could see its ears moving , and suddenly he just got up and left lol
And our last trip in September , we came onto a really big guy , lying next to the road about 200 meters from Shingwedzi camp gate . We sat with him for at least ten minutes , taking pics of him . And we watched a youngster on Shongololo loop for about 15 minutes in the river bed lying there as if he was dead . One of the females came to it , smelling and feeling around him , but he just slept :O^
