And I think even the humans with their tent must have felt the heat...

Is it just me, or are two out of three vehicles at the lion sighting off road 0'
Hi Mel
No they are on the start of the Botswana road to Rooiputs which runs parallel to the larger South African road.

Thanks again everyone for all your comments

Boxing Day 2016

We got going pretty soon after “gate opening” time which was commendable after the previous night’s wind and rain, but we were determined to make the most of the early hours of the morning.

Being creatures of habit, we set off north towards Kij Kij yet again. :O^

It was to be a morning where the smaller creatures of the Kgalagadi were to keep us occupied.

We started the morning with this sighting of a tortoise on the side of the road. They do tend to come out after the rains

Image

The Jackal pups were still in the same place as the previous day under the same tree.
We started to wonder where their parents were, as they had been pretty absent so far. :-?

Image

We hadn’t travelled more than 10 minutes when we spotted this Martial eagle parking off in a tree, (as they do \O )

Image

We arrived full of expectation at Kij Kij only to find the area deserted, so we carried on O/

This Bataleur couple were trying to dry out after the previous night’s rain. (Sorry a far away pic, but they are my favourites so I couldn’t resist)

Image

In between Kij Kij and Melkvlei the foxes came out to visit us

First up, these Bat eared foxes

And the this Cape Fox

Followed by this juvenile Pale Chanting Goshawk eating a millipede

Did you know that their defence mechanism is that they are full of cyanide, so very few predators actually eat them.( I wouldn’t) :-?

No  Interesting... and very clever at the same time

Mum and dad jackal were probably around during the night and off chasing breakfast, lunch and dinner for the youngsters when you saw them lol

Foxies times two - awesome!

Also like your raptors O:V

Thanks everyone for your patience, we’ve been away for the weekend :-)

A Flat lion and a broken tent

We went up as far as Kij Kij, and then turned around. Our plan was to head down to Twee Rivieren to top up with ice and more importantly, petrol before the petrol pumps stopped working.

We didn’t want to run short, although I had 40l standby in Gerry cans with us, as we were travelling to Polentswa the next day, and if Nossob also had a problem, so did we.

Our only sighting of note on the way down was of these tortoises having an almighty fight.
The larger one was trying desperately to drown the smaller tortoise in the puddle of water on the side of the road

Image

Once back in Twee Rivieren, we managed to get 20l of petrol , and after purchasing some supplies we were off again.
This time we went up the Auob with the plan of having some lunch at Aucherlonie and then to return to Rooiputs via Kij Kij
At Houmoed, a very flat lion was fast asleep in the shade on the far side of the riverbed.

Image

Our lunchtime break at Auchterlonie was great

Image

Our trip over the Dune road on our way home proved pleasant, with very few animal sightings

After Kij Kij we spotted this Martial eagle, which broke the monotony for a while

Image

It was mid afternoon by the time we got back to camp at Rooiputs to find that unbeknown to us, one of our tent pole had snapped, probably during the previous night’s storm. During the day, the pole had pierced the tent and the tent was half down.
Luckily we had a spare pole, so we spent the rest of the day repairing the tent, and started packing up our campsite in preparation of our move to Polentswa the next day.

We had an early braai and were in bed by 8.30

Image

That night a mother of a storm hit the Kgalagadi at about 3.30am

That martial eagle looks blind in the one eye.

Luckily you had a spare pole..... so why would one have spare poles -O-

Another huge storm O-/
