Some stuff from aat Oct 2014, I think?

Not far from Mopani camp there is/was a waterhole named Tihongonyeni ,along the Capricorn loop (s143) from the S50 towards the main road H1-6.

It’s morning and Elly was still a bit tired so she decided to sleep a bit longer. I left Mopani camp and was driving around on the search for tuskers. No tusker around so I followed the road to Mooiplaas waterhole. Nothing to see so I moved on to the S50. Nothing near Nshawu area and waterholes and decided to take the Capricorn loop. First km’s some zebra and getting closer to Tihongonyeni suddenly I saw animals at the righhand side and could not recognize immediately what it was… or could I ? No… yes…. Eland !!

-

-

It was a small family

-
Image
-

One of the horns of the male was broken (remember this …smile)

-
Image
-

I had this mixed feeling, so great to see Eland and at the same time Elly was not with me and I know she was talking for days about “may be seeing Eland”. Going back to Mopani and telling her I saw Eland … tssss….

-
Image
-

Back in Mopani… Elly asked me … did you see anything….? Ehhhh yes , I found Eland…
Ohhh no… really ?

Next day we left Mopani together and I made a kind of joke by saying “well, it’s almost the same time as yesterday so let’s find them again” Elly looked at me and her eyes ehhh yesss….

So… S50 again, turn left to Capricorn loop and almost halfway , not that far from Tihongonyeni at the righthand side…..

-

and…. (look at the male , left on photo)

-
Image
-

Same Eland family , male with broken horn.
I looked at Elly and said “well, I told you… let’s find them again” and now followed by a big big smile …

-
Image
-

This time much closer to the road, Eland family (7 family members)

And good to see the two youngsters

-
Image
-

Standing still…and enjoying this sighting , what a beautiful antelopes they are

-
Image
-

I think we have never seen them so close near the road before…

-
Image
-

I just can remember they are shy and if you are lucky to see them it’s mainly at some distance. This time very relaxed and even mother with the youngsters getting close to the road

-
Image
-

Close to this Eland family there was a group of Zebra and at the other side of the road buffalo.
The Eland moved on and we assumed they were heading towards Tihongonyeni for a drink, so we slowly followed them.
They were getting closer and closer to the road, together with some Zebra and we hoped they would cross the road…and they did !!

-
Image
-

** Forumite Eland… hope you like this **

-
Image
-

Two more to go… and they gave us a great show by crossing the road their own way…

-

-

and last shot for part II..

We were almost sure they were on their way to Tihongonyeni waterhole for drinking so we moved to this waterhole.

We did not see these Eland coming but…………… coming from the other side 3 other Eland antelopes. Amazing… Seeing Eland is not a daily thing and now two days on a row and todat even two different groups….

-
Image
-

The first two just passed and we were looking at number 3 and then just to the right of this Eland another antelope appeared…. A Roan !!

-
Image
-

We were looking at each other… with some huhhhhhhhhhhh???? Looking again and it was no joke … Roan together with Eland on one photo…. Let’s call it a wonderful and special day. :o0ps: :-) O\/ O/\
Two Eland and two Roan captured together… what a sighting.

-
Image
-

The Eland walked away to the small bush behind the waterhole but the Roan came closer…

-
Image
-

Seeing Eland was special but seeing Roan was very special. There are not many Roan left and looking at this small family we were so happy to see a young one with them.

-
Image
-

And like the Eland did before these Roan came closer and closer to the road. One of these days….. (smileeeeeeeeeeeeeee)

-
Image
-

And here the youngster… what a beauty and what a privilege

-
Image
-

The two other ones also came closer , family of 4 (dad, mom , teenager and “little” as we called him)

-
Image
-

Another shot of “little” because he is so pretty with his small !! ears

-
Image
-

And…. Like most things and specially nice things comes to an end a last shot of this Roan family before they disappeared
