Your Favourite Waterhole/Waterpoint

Bangu was a great waterhole but I think it is closed now. RP, you only gave it a 1 for proximity to a gate/camp. It's not that far from Olifants...about 15kms or so.

Ease of access also means basically main roads too, in my view, ie tar roads? Balule is there, but helluva difficult to get space, and it is a stiff trip from Olifants over winding roads...

Best sighting: surrounded by elephant for 30min


This is a marvelous spot indeed, although it can be very quiet animal-wise. It is not a natural waterpoint in the full sense, as the water sometimes gets replenished by tanker near the end of the dry season. The hide can become quite full, but not often, and it is big! This is big 5 and wild dog country deluxe.

Best sighting: Sable

This big dam has ample parking and is in one of the least-travelled areas in the south. On the rare occasions that it shrinks to a small size at the end of the winter it can be very productive, and one can see for miles and miles from the relatively high vantage. Otherwise animals are generally far away and sparse.

This was one of the first waterpoints where I sat for a day! It is normally closed, but the solar panels were still there in 2016 and sometimes it seems to be open...at least the reservoir is full on on occasion?

One has a poor view of the drinking trough for most of the year, as it is quite overgrown. Lovely trees and birdlife, though, as it is next to the Mitomeni Stream. Ample shade and relatively little traffic. But not world-famous for animals!

Gardenia Hide Male Leopard Walking towards the hide around the corner ...Took me 5 mornings of leaving Berg en Dal at gate opening and going straight to the far entrance of the S119 and tracking his Spoor ..But I GOT him eventually

One of my favorite waterholes near Maroela is Rockvale on the S36 in the best Cheetah area in Kruger..Afternoons into the sun though

Cheetah are prolific if you are the first arrival as they push off when more than one switched off car is present at Rockvale

Bangu is only 10 kms from Balule so its very close to a Top 3 in Kruger Camp..and easy to get a camping spot if you book on day 1 ...11 months in advance and Bring the superintendant Titus Nkuna some MTN Airtime
