Re: Communication on rhino poaching
Interesting read .Not sure it was worth a whole research paper but I am not in the scientific field so I guess its what they do when the working . Some good points raised I also feel they missed a few key points like the mixed messages given between .gov when they were discussing/proposing the trade in horn to countries that are now again proposing the trade which in effect nullified many of the advertising campaigns i.e. How can it be illegal if the country with the most Rhinos wants to sell horn ?
Also agree with some of the political points raised its unfortunate that some of the political leaders choose to use natural resources as a source of garnering local support but it has and is already done so now the "cats out the bag" the best way to try quell the robin hood syndrome will only be using local insiders to change the views of the masses who only see parks as a free source of food and money with little future planning .

Re: Communication on rhino poaching
Yes, thanks, Klippies.
This approach has been in vogue since a few years ago regarding the politics of antipoaching in SA, and was mentioned at a stakeholder meeting or two by SANparks. Personally I disagree and find it to be patronising to local communities. It is simple theft and they are well aware of that. Malema should not be taken seriously at all in any conversation.
It ties in with the high-level politicisation of SANparks, vote getting, overinvolvement of community upliftment etc.
The point is rhino poaching has occurred worldwide for 50 years regardless of pervading politics, and is an economic outcome and a crime. It is irresponsible to justify it based on isolated opinions and observations.
Worldwide, many gangsters have achieved Robin Hood status over the centuries, often deliberately. But they remain criminals.

Re: Communication on rhino poaching
Of some worry is the recently exposed ease with which somebody who either has no security clearance and appeared to gain access to very high profile normally no go areas within the KNP. There has been absolutely no answer from Sanparks officially on this person's status or why they were allowed to fly in an anti-poaching helicopter, attend at a shooting of a rhino and also had access to the area where the K9 dogs are kept. In order for speculation to not grow there needs to be transparency regarding all of the above as right now those of us that have read up all of the information on this person are extremely worried about the status quo!
Re: Communication on rhino poaching
I am totally baffled as to why there are no answers forthcoming on this issue!

No answer from Sanparks, no answer from Part time rangers and so the speculation as to what is going on behind the scenes will continue to grow unabated!

Without having followed the above issue and only read what is posted here, to me it seems like a storm in a glass of water, but I might be wrong
