I have used olive wood from when I prune trees here on the farm .Olive wood is dense and heavy , more than 1000kg per cubic meter , with a very fine grain , turn darker as it grows older , and fantastic for furniture manufacture . Needs to be well dried , and burns very well with fairly long-lasting embers .

Okie, so this is as good as the SA wood ?

I have located a supplier of the Olive not too far from where I live - 10 min drive.
So I will go and pick up a bag on the weekend.

If that's no good I will investigate the options of the SA wood

Reckon you could get 3-4 fires out of the 20kg bag.

It gets a bit confusing as some companies quote in kg and some in litres

Forgot to update......

So on the weekend went and got a bag of the olive wood

And had a braai with it.
Was better than with the wood I had used previously in the week.
But still not what I expected.
Perhaps I didn't use enough??

Dzombo I think you are using too little wood. I do at least 4 layers in a tower kind of system. I also because hard woods like heat to burn quickly and make coals I tend to put a few briquetts in places to help. You want the wood to burn as quickly and evenly as possible so you have coals without some wood still burning with flames.

Ok, Will try with more wood next time.
The burning log on the 2nd photo. Was actually the one on the end. But the outside hadn't caught alight,so I flipped it around and put it on top so that it would burn
