Will certainly look into your new info. - the Picker, Griffiths, Weaving Field Guide shows distribution for Miomantis as being the entire country of S. Africa, but notes, "There are 10 easily confused species in the region." Of course classifications are somewhat fluid as new studies are conducted, so that may be incorrect as well.

I think, it is reasonably safe to say it's a species in the subfamily Miomantinae, Miomantis sp. or Taumantis sp.

Just received this picture from a friend. She has a tree full of them and wants to know what it is and what she can use to get rid of them!!! I asked her to please hang on before she does because one does not kill anything on sight and that I send her an answer from the "experts"

A Cabbage Tree Emperor Moth caterpillar (Bunaea alcinoe). They can defoliate a cabbage tree but the tree will recover. The caterpillars are edible!
