Pilanesberg wildlife warrior dies after being attacked by lion

The park said Kobus Marias from the K9 unit and two rhino protection unit (RPU) staff members were laying a track for Marais’ K9 patrol dog when the attack happened.

“Unbeknown to Marais, a very thin and poor condition lion was probably lying in wait.

“The RPU staff attempted to get the lion off Marais when he was attacked but their efforts were unsuccessful.”

Marais succumbed to his wounds.

The park said the lion was shot.

“The lion has been taken to Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute for a post-mortem to determine if there was anything wrong that could not be seen by the naked eye. The incident is under investigation.”

Park management said Marais was loved by all the staff. He was described as a kind and compassionate person.

“The rhinos have lost a true friend and conservation has lost a warrior. To Lottie Marais, his wife, we express our most heartfelt condolences.

“Kobus, you have left a void in so many lives and you will be greatly missed. Thank you for your contribution. You paid the highest price.”

Family of Scottish student game ranger gored by black rhino expected to arrive in SA

The family of a young Scottish man who was gored by a black rhino in northern KwaZulu-Natal is expected to arrive in SA on Thursday.

It is understood that the 21-year-old student game ranger is recovering at a Richards Bay hospital where he will be visited by his family.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue, the student was on foot at a Pongola farm when he was trampled and gored by the rhino.

The student was found and transported to hospital by road in critical condition by the private emergency service.

“The incident occurred earlier today and prompted a search and rescue operation by IPSS Search and Rescue as well as anti-poaching units in the area.

“The student was located and preparations for evacuation were initiated.”

KZN fishermen drown after hippo tips their raft

Police search and rescue teams have located the bodies of three fishermen who drowned after a hippo attacked and capsized their raft at Jozini Dam in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

The SAPS unit responded after reports of the attack but despite scouring the dam, were unable to find the missing men.


“The incident occurred on Wednesday at about 4pm when three fishermen were placing their gill nets whilst utilising a homemade raft,” the police said.

A search and rescue unit from Empangeni assisted SAPS members from Richards Bay in the search on the dam.

Sources with knowledge of the incident told TimesLIVE that the three men had been placing illegal gill nets in the dam when a hippo attacked their raft.

The men are believed to have abandoned their raft but drowned while trying to reach the shore, which was a distance away.

Members of SAPS' search and rescue (SAR) were unable to dive due to the dangers posed by hippos in the water.

Vehicle patrols were conducted on Thursday and Friday until the bodies surfaced on Saturday and were recovered.

According to sources, the bodies were completely intact, having sustained no bite marks from hippos or crocodiles.

An inquest docket has been opened.
