In the 1930s, the world's first proper pregnancy test was developed in Cape Town. If a female platanna starts laying eggs after it is injected with urine, then the producer of the urine is pregnant. The test took only hours. It was an amazing advance for medical science. So Platannas (Xenopus laevis, African Clawed Frogs) were exported from South Africa to many places around the world in huge numbers. Breeding colonies were established. Many platannas were released or escaped. They've become the frog species with the largest distribution in the world.
