Kruger Name Changes Raise Eyebrows

Kruger Name Changes Raise Eyebrows

SanParks have announced that two famous spots in the Kruger National Park will soon have new names. These are Renosterpan and Renosterkoppies Waterholes in the Marula Region of the park.

"As part of our successful fight against rhino poaching, these waterholes will be renamed so as not to entice potential poachers to those areas. ["Renoster" is Afrikaans for rhinoceros]" said Daphne Makuna, Kruger spokesperson.

From 1 June Renosterpan will be known as Pan A, and Renosterkoppies as Pan B.

"Kruger invites visitors and other stakeholders to submit suggestions for long-term names for these sites", says Makuna, "as we see it as an opportunity to add some cultural and historic flavour to the visitor experience."

However, DA spokesperson for the Department Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Lenku-Vince Oosthuizen, has sounded the alarm about potential political meddling.

"It has come to our attention that SanParks wish to rename certain places in our National Parks after ANC struggle personalities, and this will begin with the two waterholes in question".

Name change submissions can be sent to Daphne.Makuna@sanparks.org by no later than 4 April 2025.

This is a developing story.
