Flood damage shuts down section of R40 in Mpumalanga, Sanral warns

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has announced the closure of a section of the R40 national road between White River and Hazyview in Mpumalanga due to flood damage caused by recent heavy rain.

“The closure is due to a slip on the road posing a hazard for motorists,” said Mabuyi Mhlanga, Sanral manager for Mpumalanga.

“We have installed heavy delineators as a temporary safety measure and will replace them with concrete barriers before the end of the week. A temporary stop-and-go system is in place until a permanent solution is implemented.”


Sanral urged motorists to proceed with caution, adhere to warning signs, reduce speed and drive carefully in the ongoing heavy rain.

Maintenance of roads taken over by SANRAL will improve tourist experience in the Lowveld

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) recently announced that it is taking over road maintenance from the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.

The tourism industry in Mpumalanga has been concerned about the lack of maintenance of roads for some time.

“Kruger Lowveld Tourism is pleased with these overdue interventions on our road network by SANRAL and looks forward to increased tourist numbers as a result,” says Linda Grimbeek, chief executive of the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT).

The routes that have been taken over by SANRAL include:

• R540 from Dulllstroom to Lydenburg/Mashishing

• R538: From White River to Hazyview

• Hazyview onto the R538 to the R40 intersection

• The R533 between Graskop and Bushbuckridge

• Roads around Crossing Shopping Centre Roads in Mbombela

• R571: From Komatipoort to the Marloth Park intersection

• R40: From White River to Mbombela

• Plaston Road, which includes the section in Karino leading to KMiA

• Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail road (R40): Bulembu Border to Barberton

• Low’s Creek to Kaapmuiden (R38).

Roads in other tourist towns such as White River, Hazyview, and Lydenburg are also receiving much-needed attention.

“Work on the R540 between Dullstroom and Lydenburg/Mashishing commenced some weeks ago and Easter visitors have been vocal in support and gratitude for the greatly improved quality of this critical access route. Although there are stop-and-go delays while construction is ongoing, tourists can now take comfort in safe passage to the norther parts of the Kruger Lowveld region,” Grimbeek says.
