yes its a rather bad situation and not helped by lack of funds and willpower in KZN wildlife The reason they have to investigate these is it is often the locals that break the fence in the first place .Have heard from friends that were helping out KZN HR that they get blocked from doing projects in these parks as there is such poor management happening and the managers dont want any outside interference . IMHO it really is about time that all the national game parks fell under one body -as much as Sanparks has there issues I fear that KZN parks are in allot worse position and then there is also isimangaliso that operates as a separate entity to KZN Wildlife as well

This compensation costs reserves and SANparks millions every year. It is tricky to verify, and sometimes they lie!

Better to work on the fences, but lions don't really concern themselves too much with fences unless they are electrified.

If there is a fence, even if not electrified, at least the animals escaping ought to be fewer. It cannot be very expensive to erect electrified fences

TWO of the five lions that escaped from the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park on Tuesday are still on the loose.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesman, Musa Mnthambo, has confirmed that five lions had broken out through a hole in a fence, but three have since been recaptured.

Animals escaping from the park are becoming a worrying situation for the staff at Ezemvelo, but even more so for the neighbouring communities who fear for their lives and that of their livestock.

Work on replacing the existing fence has been ongoing, but owing to circumstances such as the replacing of previously appointed contractors because of contractual issues, the task has been delayed.

Mntambo said the fencing would be replaced soon, but he could not provide a completion date..

He said some community members bordering the reserve’s boundary where the lions escaped have reported stock losses, but these are being investigated.

‘If it is proven that the lions were responsible for livestock losses, Ezemvelo would compensate the owners.’

KZN's missing lions are 'probably hyenas'

Lions have indeed been at large in communal areas around the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park but, in the latest scare, the creatures have turned out o be hyena, say authorities.

DURBAN - Two lions reported to still be at large since a group of 13 lions escaped from the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park about a month ago may in fact be another type of feared creature.

Not the feline with the potential to feed on humans, but something more canine: hyenas.


KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife spokesman Musa Mntambo said: “Last week we heard of two lions out and on investigation we found hyena spoor.”

He said that “a month or so ago”, 13 lions had escaped and that members of communities in the area around the reserve had reported their presence to Ezemvelo.

“Within a few days we captured all 13 of them and returned them to the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park.”


The area has a history of local communities living in fear of lions at large. Two years ago eight lions were reported to have escaped and been recaptured.

Last year, Sabelo Masondo, walking in a rural area near Vryheid, encountered a lion. He escaped over a fence with the lion in pursuit. He reported that it had torn his jeans and was in a severe state of shock when admitted to hospital. He needed pyschological counselling, according to reports.

Game farms in the area, none of which kept lions, joined the search.
