To stand a chance of seeing a Pennant-winged Nightjar (with pennants) you need to do a sunset drive from Punda Maria in November/December. The night drive will be too late as the nightjars display for a very short period just after sunset. Do book well in advance as the drives are popular – even better, book two and you can pass your second booking onto someone else if you are lucky enough to see them on the first evening.
You will not see them self driving because you need to be off road and out after normal gate closing. The guides will have the spot where they have been seen well marked.
A truly wonderful experience.
Klipspringer - looks like you were super lucky and got to see them before it was dark. My picture was taken at 18:40.
