Sometimes it’s not until you don’t see what you want to see, that you truly open your eyes.

BC, I also wouldn't suggest coming all the way here just to visit the Pilanesberg...it's a nice park, but nothing like Kruger. If you're in Gauteng for a couple of days, then it's a great outing.
RP - we have little refreshments all day there.

Re: Dams of the Pilansberg
Great to see more of SA other than Kruger and yes, I read TTs about Pilanesberg
(which got me very much tempted btw), but this dam thing has a totally different quality.
Get us some more, please!

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

It is great to see all this interest in the Pilansberg
And yes in the Pilansberg you may drink at the hides. And I just bring in my mini cooler bag and sit at the hide and have a couple of beers It is definitely the way to spend an afternoon!!
I will go look for pics now

Batlhako Dam
One of the most tranquil spots in the Pilansberg lies in the less popular North West of the Park. The sour veld of the North West is not conducive to attracting many grazers. But an oh so beautiful road where you can enjoy the the peace and see the red grass bow to the wind
These are the views of Moloto, which means buffalo. One of the three roads in Pilansberg where you stand any chance of seeing Buffalo! And it is on this road that the secluded Batlhako hide overlooks a dam of the same name
The Giant Kingfisher uses the dead stumps in front of the hide to launch deadly dives into the clear water! I never got a decent pic The hippos tend to stick to right of the hide in the mornings and migrate across to the 'sub dam' and island on the left in the afternoons The waterbuck are always about Batlako dam too

More great info
Pilansberg is far for me though Imfolozi and Kruger are closer, but I have to say "I have been there"

Great info and photos. I wouldn't mind taking a visit. I'll have to speak to my tour operator. aka Moggie dog.
