NELSPRUIT - Vier pasiënte met malaria is binne vier dae in Rob Ferreira Hospitaal opgeneem. Een van hulle is intussen dood en 'n tweede een se toestand is kritiek.

Mnr. Dirk Steyl (39), 'n reaksie-offisier van Hi-Tech Sekuriteit Nelspruit, veg om sy lewe in die hospitaal se intensiewesorgeenheid. Steyl het nie onlangs na Mosambiek gereis nie en moes dus die siekte in die Nelspruit-omgewing opgedoen het.

Volgens mnr. Nico Grobler, 'n bestuurder by Hi-Tech, doen Steyl gewoonlik diens in die Sterkspruit-omgewing buite Nelspruit. Hy het verlede week siek begin voel en is dokter toe. Daar is vir hom gesê dat hy griep het en hy is daarvoor behandel. Sy toestand het nie verbeter nie en hy het Donderdagaand stuiptrekkings van die koors gekry.

Hy is toe na Rob Ferreira waar hy opgeneem is. Ingeligte bronne het aan Laevelder bevestig dat Steyl se toestand kritiek is. Hy het serebrale malaria, wat beteken dat sy brein aangetas is. Hy ondergaan ook reeds nierdialise.

Dr. Corné Ackermann, hoof- uitvoerende beampte van die hospitaal, het vertel dat die pasiënt wat dood is, 'n Mosambiekse burger was wat dikwels ver noord in dié buurland gereis het. "Nog 'n vrou wat onlangs na Mosambiek gereis het, word in 'n gewone saal vir malaria behandel. Die vierde slagoffer is wel 'n Mosambiekse burger, maar bly al 'n geruime tyd in Suid-Afrika en het nie onlangs na dié land teruggekeer nie. Die verste wat hy die afgelope ruk gereis het, was na Kaapmuiden."

Mnr. Ronnie Masilela, woordvoerder vir die gesondheidsdepartement, het nie op Laevelder se navrae gereageer nie. Die koerant het wel in Februarie 'n omvattende artikel oor malaria gedoen waarin Masilela aangehaal is dat hy sê dat dié siekte tog nou in Nelspruit opgedoen word. Hy het toe bygevoeg dat die departement en Mbombela Munisipaliteit 'n program in werking gestel het om die uitbroei van muskiete te beperk.

Steyl se vrou kon nie vir kommentaar bereik word nie. Grobler het inwoners versoek om vir sy herstel te bid.

Malaria-simptome sluit in koors, erge hoofpyn en lyfseer. Dié parasiet breek 'n pasiënt se rooibloedselle af en hoop op in die niere, longe, lewer en die brein en veroorsaak skade aan hierdie organe.


Lots of Malaria about...including cerebral. Important is that at least one case was infected in Nelspruit, so recent travellers be careful!

Normally starts after about 3 weeks, but could be as little as 10 days...or a month or more...

We'll be going to Kruger in August for the first time, we normally go late September/October and always take malaria pills. Is malaria a problem in August?

I was bitten by mosquito also outside the rainly season in August. But I can not tell you if it was an anopheles one or any other mosquito.

In my experience the risk is greatly reduced in the winter months, simply due to less mosquitos! Better safe than sorry, though, if you don't react negatively to the pills!

Malaria cases reported in Mpumalanga

Mbombela - Fifteen people in Mpumalanga's Hazyview area have contracted malaria, the health department said on Wednesday.

The cases were reported since last week, a Sapa correspondent reported.

"Twenty-four malaria cases were received at Matikwane Hospital [in Mkhuhlu outside Hazyview]. Fifteen were positive while nine were negative," the department's spokesperson Ronnie Masilela said.

The patients were from Goromane Trust, Mkhuhlu, Cork, Lillydale outside Hazyview, and Buyisonto outside Thulamahashe.

"Three patients are still in hospital and are receiving the best medical care we can provide."

He said the department was awaiting a report to determine whether Vuyani Nkuna, 43, from Goromane, died because of malaria.

"We cannot yet confirm that the death was related to malaria until we have a report about the cause of death," he said.

Nkuna’s widow, Nopinki Bikisha, 44, said her husband died of malaria last week.

“My husband started sweating on Monday and told me he was weak and had a headache,” said Bikisha.

She said she took him to a clinic outside her village on Tuesday as he was getting weaker.

"They called an ambulance and it took him to Matikwane Hospital. He was transferred to Themba Hospital in Kabokweni that night. He died the next day," she said.

Forgive Mokoena, 21, and her mother Assa Mokoena, 61, were admitted to Matikwane Hospital on Tuesday.

A malaria outbreak in Limpopo has led to the issuing of a travel warning and the dispatch of health teams to the province, reports the SABC.

Malaria parasites infect and destroy red blood cells when they enter the blood stream. Symptoms include fever and flu-like symptoms, such as chills, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Severe malaria (only caused by P. falciparum)

Infection with P. falciparum, if not promptly treated, can quickly progress to severe malaria. The main symptoms of severe malaria include: coma, severe breathing difficulties, low blood sugar, and low blood haemoglobin (severe anaemia). As they have little or no immunity to the parasite, children are particularly at risk. If untreated, severe malaria can lead to death.


Cerebral malaria (only caused by P. falciparum)

Malaria is classified as cerebral when it manifests with cerebral symptoms, such as coma.

The most hospitals which have recorded the highest numbers of malaria patients are Donald Frazer, Nkhensani, Malamulele, Musina and Maphutha Malatjie.
