Description
Low, spreading, much branched perennial herb, 100-250 mm high, with a long thickened tap root and slender stems; leaves borne on slender petioles, up to 50 mm wide × 70 mm long, with 3-7 lobes, each lobe pinnatisect, covered with fine silvery-white hairs closely adpressed to the leaf surface; flowers (Sept.-Nov.) white to pale pink with darker veins (var. incanum) or deep magenta-pink (var. multifidum), up to 40 mm in diameter, borne on slender pedicels covered with fine hairs; fruit an
elongated capsule resembling a stork’s bill.

Distribution
Western and Eastern Cape Provinces. Both varieties have been recorded from the Cape Peninsula eastwards to Knysna, but only var. multifidum occurs in the Eastern Cape Province, in coastal districts as far as Port Alfred.

Habitat
Common and widespread on flats, hill slopes and dunes.

Description
Tufted perennial to 50 cm, with upper leaves opposite, narrowly oval, channelled, finely toothed, ± hairy, with small white pockets at the base of the teeth, 3–20 mm wide. Flowers are white or creamy with dark greenish veins, with petals shallowly lobed at the apex. Flowering season from Oct to May. Fruits are held erect, 65-100 mm long.

Distribution
Found in the four northern provinces of South Africa, Limpopo, North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and also in the northern Eastern Cape. The distribution extends beyond Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, well into tropical Africa, including Kenya.

Habitat
Found in hot savanna, grassland and bushveld. It grows amongst grasses at an altitude of 600-1700 m, in scrubby grasslands, or in mopane woodlands, on stony soils.
