Saw my first ever kill on the Southern Bit!

1992, during the drought, we stayed at Letaba with a nice Kombi and two foreign students, one American, one British...

We went up North early, (I was still young) and a member of our party spotted a cheetah on the sand scarcely a km from camp!

It was resting, and we carried on. Later, after brunch, we could see a conglomeration of cars from the Restaurant, and went to investigate at about 13h00.

The bush was utterly denuded next to the river, so there was a long row of vehicles parked facing there, sort of like a "drive-in" movie setup...a Parks official was having his hands full trying to get tourists to sort of stay relatively near the loops...but there were no loops, really, just earth...dunno if anyone remembers that drought?

Anyway, we got a prime spot, and shortly a herd of impala came to drink at the only water there.

The cheetah had been hiding behind some nearby reeds, and took off! It was not much of a contest, as the sand definitely favoured the cat's paws!

After I saw the cheetah easily nailing an impala, the next thing I remember is lying on my back outside the vehicle, as the foreigners pulled open the side door, pushed me out of the way and rushed for a closer look! 0*\

I even lost my flip-flops in the event...a sure indication of a collision! =O:

The cheetah rested a bit, as they do, and almost immediately a hyena arrived and took it away! 0*\

Meanwhile, the official arrived, and we prudently let the foreigners deal with him, as in "Wow, man! Did you see that!?" And only got off with a warning!
