We looking at about R25000 (makes it double the cost of the Tamron) with a release date of this September - maybePJL wrote:Yes I have heard rumours for quite a long time about a new Canon 100-400... the problem is not knowing when it'll be released or how much it'll cost.Duke wrote:Thanks PJL.
Our Canon 100-400 lens is old and had a drop or two so we are in the market for a replacement. Will definitely consider the Tamron. Have heard Canon are busy upgrading the 100-400

Looks like a rotating zoom ring (it is push/pull now), New stabilizer system and lighter weight.

PJL how fast is it on continues focus when tracking a bird or moving object, does it keep focus or only now and then does it get it into focus??

Like you say Duke, there's quite a few 'maybes'Duke wrote:We looking at about R25000 (makes it double the cost of the Tamron) with a release date of this September - maybePJL wrote:Yes I have heard rumours for quite a long time about a new Canon 100-400... the problem is not knowing when it'll be released or how much it'll cost.Duke wrote:Thanks PJL.

Judging from some of the patents that Canon have filed recently there is definitely one on the cards, but I wasn't willing to wait too long, and as you say, the expected price is quite high unfortunately

I find that it is very good at tracking moving objects - and it is helped by selecting specific area focus points rather than all. However as I said I haven't yet had a chance to capture a bird-in-flight situation.... Addo was very windy last week so most birds were just hanging to branchesBushveld Jock wrote:PJL how fast is it on continues focus when tracking a bird or moving object, does it keep focus or only now and then does it get it into focus??

Interesting!
And, Duke, what do you consider old regarding a lens? I've had mine for 4 or 5 years now
and hope we'll still have lots of time together since those beasts don't come cheap.

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.
