Looks like a rotating zoom ring (it is push/pull now), New stabilizer system and lighter weight.

I find that it is very good at tracking moving objects - and it is helped by selecting specific area focus points rather than all. However as I said I haven't yet had a chance to capture a bird-in-flight situation....
