Sanparks employee kills hippo
Nicolene Smalman | 15 July 2014

SKUKUZA – An employee of SANParks killed a hippo late Thursday night when he was on his way to Lower Sabie to see his terminally ill mother.
A reader, Mr Ken Graham, enquired with Lowvelder about the hippo that was killed on the H4-1 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park (KNP). The newspaper asked SANParks spokesman Mr Isaac Phaala about the incident. He then confirmed that a hippo had been killed on that road.
“A staff member based at Lower Sabie was attending to official SANParks business on Thursday. The meeting he had attended finished late that evening. He requested permission from Lower Sabie’s section ranger to travel at night as required and it was granted. He decided to overnight in Skukuza to drive back at the first break of dawn on Friday,” Phaala said.
However, that night he received a call that his mother was very ill and therefore he urgently needed to return home. “His mother is terminally ill with cancer. He drove back to Lower Sabie and unfortunately hit a hippo. The animal was killed on impact. The trip was authorised, but investigations are underway and KNP management is dealing with the case.”

This is even more bizarre than previous incidents..but condolences to the Mother..I have lost family to cancer myself.

1. Why is the terminally ill patient staying at lower Sabie staff village?

2. Why did the driver apply for permission to do a night drive, then not do it?

3. Why are investigations underway, if the trip was authorised by the section ranger?

4. Of what relevance is the statement that the driver was in Skukuza on official business?

5. How on earth do you survive a collision with a hippo without going to hospital..unless you are driving a truck?

But there will be more responses... :O^

Hello!

Elephant Calf killed by Company Vehicle in Kruger
This not on web yet, but in today's Lowvelder

Will scan later, but a vehicle belonging to a security company on its way to Malelane gate hit the calf at around 17h45 on Wednesday, near Afsaal.

They were late for the gate but phoned to get a late exit permit. The owner of the company says that they were not speeding (presumably he knows this from satellite tracking evidence? :-? )

The two men received minor injuries and the Avanza was written off. The calf died immediately.
